Dr Mokarram Hossain is Associate Professor at theZienkiewicz Institute (ZI) for Modelling, Data, and AI in Swansea University. The ZI is considered as the World-leading Centre of Excellence in computationalmodelling for the last five decades. After completing his Bachelor inBangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, Dr Hossain obtainedMasters in Computational Engineering (2005) from Technical University ofBraunschweig, Germany. He obtained a PhD in Mechanical Engineering (2010) fromUniversity of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany. He moved to the UK, at first inNorthumbria University as a Lecturer in 2015, then to Swansea University as aSenior Lecturer in 2017. Dr Hossain’sresearch interests lie in the wide and interdisciplinary areas of softpolymeric and active multifunctional materials ranging from material synthesis, experimental study to computational modelling. He has been active in the areasof biological tissue modelling and polymeric material characterisations underthermo-electro-magneto-mechanical loads. He has numerous fundamental andcutting-edge contributions in the areas of polymer curing modelling,electro-active, magneto-active polymers, hydrogel experiments and modelling. Hehas obtained several research grants including from UK Research Council(EPSRC), Royal Society and industries for energy harvesting, soft materialcharacterisations using electro-active/ magneto-active polymers. Dr Hossainobtained the best Postdoc Paper Prize from the UK Association for ComputationalMechanics (UKACM). He published more than 120 peer-reviewed journal papers inmany leading journals across disciplines of materials, mechanics, andcomputations.

报告摘要:
Soft matter such as multi-functional rubber-likematerials and active hydrogels gain unprecedented attention in recent yearsthanks to their wide-spread potential applications in soft robotics to drugdelivery in healthcare sectors. While applications of soft matter areincreasing exponentially, robust synthesis techniques and appropriateexperimental set-ups of these complex materials are paramount. Experimentalcharacterisations of soft matter are multi-facets. On the one hand, soft materials have complexmechanical and physical characteristics such as extreme deformations, strainand time-dependence, stress-softening, degradations, temperature andenvironment sensitivity. One the other hand, sample preparations frommaterials, representations and fixations within experimental set-ups; dataextraction and monitoring etc face challenges due to their finite deformationsand intricate micro-mechanical structures. In this talk, several challenges inthe case of experimental characterisations of soft polymers will be presentedfollowed by their potential solutions that have been identified in our lab overthe last few years.
