Abstract:As a viable accommodation option, the retirement village has been widely accepted to promote and enhance independence, choice and quality of life for old people. With an increasing aging population moving into retirement villages and a widespread acceptance of the need for sustainable development in Australia, the demand for green retirement villages is increasing. However, very limited research to date has examined the provision of green retirement villages. This study aims to understand unique requirements of aged people towards sustainable communities in retirement villages and identify best practices to address their needs. In addition, through the analysis of challenges and problems faced by the current Australian retirement village industry, it will provide lessons learnt for its future development and offer valuable implications for China’s senior housing industry.
