Research Focus
Usingthe agronomic expertise, Dr. Jane Mt. Pleasant examines Iroquois agriculturefrom a multi-disciplinary perspective that includes history, archeology,paleobotany, and cultural/social anthropology in order to provide a criticallyneeded bridge between scholars in the humanities and social sciences who workin Iroquois Studies. More recently Dr. Jane Mt. Pleasant has expanded thisresearch to include pre-Columbian agriculture in eastern/central North America,to better understand the nature and productivity of indigenous agriculture moregenerally in this region.
Teaching Focus
Dr.Jane Mt. Pleasant teaches a First-Year Writing Seminar in American IndianStudies, "Science Meets Spirit," that contrasts western scienceapproaches to natural resource management with resource management based onindigenous knowledge. In addition, Dr. Jane Mt. Pleasant teaches a 2000-levelcourse in Horticulture, "Plants and Human Well Being," that exposesstudents to the multiple ways that we interact with plants and plant productsin order to increase their awareness of the many non-traditional career andavocational opportunities within the field of Horticulture. Dr. Jane Mt.Pleasant also teaches HORT 2200, Practicing Sustainable Landcare, whichencourages students to consider how they will manage personal and publiclandscapes for long-term sustainability.
