Ordinaryportland cement (OPC) is the primary binding material for modern construction,yet it has the most embodied carbon among all concrete constituents. There isan urgent need to find supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) that arewidely available, with equal or better performance than OPC but a much lowercarbon footprint. Meanwhile, the lack of natural resources is a constant threatto the sustainable develop of Singapore. There are local low-grade/wastematerials that can potentially be used for construction if properly treated. Prof. Geng’ talk, titled ‘Towardsa more sustainable built environment – some material research experiences inNUS’, will share several solutions developed by his team in NUS, on how to usewaste material to create high performance construction materials. In addition Dr. Geng willalso share his experience of using machine learning algorithm to help analysisthe microstructure of concrete.
报告人简介:

Dr.Guoqing Geng received his PhD degree from Department of Civil and EnvironmentalEngineering (CEE) of UC Berkeley in 2017, with research interests on microscalechemistry and mineralogy of cementitious materials. He was awarded apostdoctoral fellowship in Paul Scherer Institute (Switzerland), where hestudied the durability of concrete both as a construction material and hostingmaterial for radioactive wastes. Since 2019, Dr. Geng leads a research group inCEE of National University of Singapore,where he currently serves as the Department Associate Head (Graduate ResearchProgram). His research focuses on the sustainability and performance-based designing ofconstruction materials, as well as predicting and enhancing their long-termdurability. He is a board member of the American Concrete Institute – SingaporeChapter, Singapore Concrete Institute. He is also the East Asian RegionConvener and technical committee members of RILEM. He servesthe editorial board of Cementand Concrete Research, Journal of Advanced Concrete Technology, Case Studies inConstruction Materials, Cleaner Materials, Waste Disposal and SustainableEnergy.
