Research Center for Science of Forecasting

The Research Center for Science of Forecasting (hereinafter referred to as “the Center”) was organized in 2009 and jointly set up in 2014 by SCUT and Guangdong Provincial Bureau of Statistics. Adhering to the strategic development concept of advancing with the times and connecting with the international community, the Center has actively introduced various modern statistical theories, as well as methods of artificial intelligence and machine learning, and conducted forward-looking theoretical and empirical research. Its research areas include forecasting and decision making, financial time series, quantitative economy, data mining methods, investment decision and risk management, financial management and corporate finance, financial engineering and risk management, technology finance and financial technology.

Mr. XING Xiaowei, the previous Guangdong Provincial Bureau of Statistics and the Finance Committee of the Standing Committee of the Guangdong Provincial People's Congress, is the Honorary Director of the Center, Professor Wang Shouyang of the Chinese Academy of Sciences is the Director of the Academic Committee, and Professor Yang Jianhui of the School of Business Administration of SCUT is the Director of the Center. Professor Yang Jianhui is a member of the Academic Committee of the School of Business Administration of SCUT, the academic leader of the Financial and Financial Decision Team of SCUT, an expert of NNSF peer-review panel, an expert of NSSF peer-review panel, a member of Guangdong Financial Science and Technology Committee, as well as a consultant of the Think-tank for the Great Bay Area of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau.

The Center has 12 researchers, including six professors (including three PhD supervisors), three associate professors and one lecturer, and eight doctoral students.

The Center has hosted and undertaken four general projects of NNSF research projects, two NSSF research projects, 30 provincial and ministerial research projects, and three consulting projects sponsored by enterprises, the founding of these projects are more than 10 million RMB yuan. In addition, the research team of the Center has published more than 100 academic papers in international and domestic journals, including more than 50 papers included by SSCI, SCI and EI index, and 30 more papers included by CSSCI index. Beyond this, it has produced a large number of decision-making consultation reports for the Guangdong provincial government and Guangzhou municipal government and the Great Bay Area government departments, and received highly comments. The major projects and key projects supported by Guangdong provincial government entitled “2011 Index on Welfare Evaluation of Guangdong” and “2012-2015 Welfare Evaluation of Guangdong” have had a major impact at home and abroad. 

The Center conducts research and provides services in the following areas: macroeconomic forecasting and government decision-making, industry and industrial forecasting and application, microeconomic forecasting and corporate decision-making, international economic dynamics and national policy analysis, modern time series theory and methods, Intelligent statistical theory and methods, sample prediction theory and modeling, comprehensive and integrated forecasting methods, development of predictive system software, financial engineering and risk management, technology finance and financial technology.

In addition, the Center has provided scientific basis and suggestions for all level of government departments to make scientific decisions; provided guidance for enterprises, especially technology enterprises and financial institutions, in order to apply scientific prediction theories and methods to solve practical problems; conducted training on prediction theory and technology for the society; and provided a platform of communication and cooperation for relevant institutions and individuals at home and abroad.
