On October 23, the first Guangdong Intelligent Water Affairs Innovation Competition - Guanghuiyuan Cup Rematch was successfully held in the Transportation Building of South China University of Technology. The competition was led by Guangdong Water Conservancy Society and cosponsored by School of Civil Engineering and Transportation of South China University of Technology and Shenzhen Guanghuiyuan Hydraulic Construction Engineering Co. LTD. The purpose of this activity is to cultivate students’ collaborative ability, innovation ability and practical ability by means of science and technology competition, to encourage college students to participate in the construction of intelligent water affairs with their original technology, to carry out scientific and technological innovation in the field of intelligent water affairs, and to improve the quality of personnel training. The preliminary round of the competition was launched in April and ended in August this year, and therematch was held on October 23. The competition attracted more than 40 student teams from more than 10 sister institutions in the province, including Sun Yat-sen University, Jinan University, South China Agricultural University and Guangdong University of Technology. In the preliminary stage, 24 teams were selected to enter the final round after online letter evaluation by a number of experts. The final round was held in the form of offline student defense and scoring by experts. Finally, 2 first prizes, 6 second prizes and 10 third prizes were awarded after fierce competition.
A total of four teams from our college won awards, including one 1 prize and 3 third prizes. The entry “Environmental Protection Pioneer - Intelligent Surface Garbage Collection Unmanned Boat”, which was completed by four students, Shi Lei, Liu Xinyu, Mao Yinuo and Huang Zhicheng, under the guidance of Prof. Cheng Xiangju, won the first prize of the competition. The entry won unanimous praise from the judges in both the preliminary and final stages, and won the first place in its category with high scores. In addition, the entry “UAV Remote Sensing Water Quality Intelligent Inversion,” which was supervised by Prof. Wang Zhaoli and completed by the team of four students, Jiang Jie, Chen Yuhong, Gao Weizhi and Du Liya, won the third prize. So was the entry “Rapid Urban Flooding Forecasting Based on Multi-output Random Forest Algorithm”, which was supervised by Prof. Lai Chengguang and completed by the team of Yaoxing Liao, Zeng Zhaoyang, Chen Peiqi and Sun Haowei. And the entry “Anomaly Detection and Warning Model for Spatio-temporal Big Data”, which was supervised by Dr. Wu Xushu and completed by the team of Chen Jiachao, He Sijing, Feng Jiajin and Du Jiakai, also won the third prize.

After the competition, an award ceremony was held in the Academic Lecture Hall of the Transportation Building. The ceremony was attended by more than 20 experts and scholars, including Yan Wenyao, former second-level inspector of Guangdong Provincial Water Resources Department and vice chairman of Guangdong Provincial Water Resources Society, Zhang Yi, secretary-general of Guangdong Provincial Water Resources Society, Wu Hongjun, president of Shenzhen Water Resources Engineering Industry Association and general manager of Shenzhen Guanghuiyuan Hydraulic Construction Engineering Co. LTD, Prof. Cong Peitong, Dean of School of Water Resources and Civil Engineering, South China Agricultural University, and Prof. Liu Bingjun, Vice Dean of School of Geographical Sciences and Planning, Sun Yat-sen University, etc.

Mr. Wu Hongjun, president of Shenzhen Water Resources Engineering Industry Association and general manager of Shenzhen Guanghuiyuan Hydraulic Construction Engineering Co. LTD, pointed out the significance of this competition. He explained the current needs and development prospects of the industry with his own experience of more than 20 years and raised expectations for the training of talents in universities, encouraging the exploration of 5G, AI, big data and other advanced technologies combined with water affairs, so that scientific research and industry production are more in line.
Mr. Yan Wenyao, former second-level inspector of the Guangdong Provincial Water Resources Department and vice chairman of the Guangdong Water Resources Society, said at the award ceremony that he was glad to see enterprises, universities and college students participating in the construction of intelligent water affairs, which has great potential in the field of intelligent water affairs in the future. He also pointed out that intelligent water affair is in line with the new era of high-quality development needs of hydraulic engineering, in line with the “851” high-quality development blueprint of hydraulic engineering in Guangdong. He hopes that the intelligent water affairs innovation competition to become the province’s brand activity in water conservancy industry, and can be held every year in the future.

After the speeches of the guests, the award certificates and prizes were presented to the winning contestants. At the end of the ceremony, the flag of the competition was solemnly handed over to Prof. Liu Bingjun, the representative of Sun Yat-sen University, the next organizer, by Mr. Zheng Cunhui. After receiving the flag, Prof. Liu said he would make the next competition better and live up to everyone’s expectations!
