Introduction

Located in Wushan Campus of South China University of Technology (SCUT), the School of Civil Engineering and Transportation (SCET) was established in January 2008 when the then Department of Civil Engineering and School of Traffic Engineering merged.

SCET has 222 full-time faculty and staff dedicated to education and academic research. Among 178 faculty members, 61 are professors, 95 are associate professors. It also has two dual-hired members of the Chinese National Academy of Engineering, two chair professors, one Chang Jiang Scholars Program, three awardees of Outstanding Researcher Fund by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and two awardees of Pearl River Scholar. A total of 18 international scholars are hired as partial-time and adjunct professors. Our school has a large group of talented young faculty (under 40 years old). To best complement different expertise among our faculty, a total of 21 teaching clusters are formed led by six award-winning professors.

SCET consists of eight undergraduate programs which six of them were endorsed as national first-class programs and seven of them were endorsed by Guangdong Province. For graduate programs, our school includes five first-level disciplines: Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Mechanics, Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering, and Water Conservancy Engineering. Four of these five disciplines along with 12 second-level disciplines have credentials to grant a doctoral degree. Our school offers a total of 26 master's programs including four professional degrees. In addition, four postdoctoral programs are available.

Committed to SCUT motto -- 'Study Extensively, Reflect Carefully, Discriminate Clearly, Practice Earnestly', SCET, known as a cradle of entrepreneurs and engineers. Our school offers distinct advantages to undergraduate students with choices of a large array of course offerings, top facilities and centers, interaction with our first-class faculty members, hands-on involvement in research, and a wide range of extracurricular activities. Our school has six distinguished courses at the university level, eight distinguished courses at the provincial level, and three distinguished courses at the national level. In addition, our school also has eight provincial first-class online courses (theoretical mechanics, mechanics of materials, concrete structure theory, structural mechanics, steel structure, load and design principles, traffic design, and structural design concepts). Currently, our school has 3454 students, including 251 doctoral students, 908 full-time master students, 492 part-time master students, and 1803 undergraduate students. Our undergraduate and graduate students are equipped to enter professional practice with high qualifications, comprehensive skillsets, global vision, initiative, innovation, entrepreneurship, and strong leadership to build our future society and improve the quality of life for people around the world.

Thanks to the “985” and “211” Project and China’s construction plan of world-class universities and first-class disciplines, our school was provided with first-class facilities including the State Key Laboratory of Subtropical Building Science, the Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Modern Civil Engineering Technology, 11 other research centers funded by our university, Guangzhou city, Guangdong province, and state government. There are 16 professional laboratories under our school, with a total of 23 full-time experimental staff, 5 of them have senior titles. The total area of the experimental center is 14,131 square meters, the total number of equipment is 13863, and the total assets are more than 24.935 million yuan, of which 284 are more than 100,000 yuan and 86 are more than 400,000 yuan. Form 2018 to 2022, a total of 2162 new funded research projects has been awarded which is 588.34 million yuan incoming funds, including 116 projects were funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China. More than 1201 patents and software copyrights are granted. Over 1227 papers were published. From 2018 to 2021, our school has won one second-degree prizes of national scientific and technological progress, 13 provincial and ministerial science and technology awards (3 first prizes/ 10 second prizes).

As a leading national university in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, our school strives to connect with peer institutions around the world. Our undergraduate schools have the opportunities to earn a second degree from top global universities such as the University of Missouri, the University of Edinburgh and the University of Birmingham (2+2), or can be a bachelor master's link degree program student at the University of Queensland (3+1+1), the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, the University of Western Australia and the University of Missouri (3+2), or participate short-term exchange programs such as the University of New South Wales. Meanwhile, graduate students can be sponsored by the national or local government to study or participate in short-term exchange programs at globally recognized universities such as the University of New South Wales, the Delft University of Technology, etc. Our school is dedicated to supporting professional training of our faculty and staff, encouraging for sabbatical leave, attending international conferences, and collaborating with global experts.
