School of Civil Engineering and Transportation (SCET), South China University of Technology (SCUT) was born when Department of Civil Engineering and School of Traffic Engineering merged in January 2008.

SCET lies in Wushan Campus of SCUT, one member of Shipai Center of Universities, Tianhe District, Guangzhou City. The school contains five first - grade State subjects: Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Mechanics, Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering, and Water Conservancy Engineering. It has two first-level disciplines authorized with doctor’s degree, 12 second-level disciplines authorized with doctor’s degree, five first-level disciplines authorized with master’s degree, 22 second-level disciplines authorized with master’s degree, four cultivating fields for engineering graduates, three first-level key disciplines in Guangdong Province and four centers for post-doctoral studies.

SCET takes discipline construction as a target, makes building a strong talent team its fundamental goal, and carries out student nurturing as its main priority. It remains committed to teaching and scientific research in everything it does. Guided by common goals, concerted efforts, innovation and enterprising spirit, both its staffs and students move forward on the path of comprehensive, coordinated and sustainable development. Through this kind of ways, SCET is becoming better in the scale and quality of teaching, thus laying a solid foundation for its overall development

SCET strives to build a team of talents who are equipped with rich teaching and academic experience. Among 216 staffs work for SCET, there are 148 teachers, 51 professors, 38 supervisors of doctorate candidates, 75 associate professors and 144  with doctor’s degree. It also has five double employed academicians, four chair professors, one specially-invited professor who is a member of Chang Jiang Scholars Program, a winner of National Outstanding Youth Fund, and a Pearl River Scholar. 23 experts and scholars who are famous at China and abroad are hired as our consulting professors or part-time professor. Moreover, its team of talents is well-structured in both professional titles and ages -- 61% of the faculties have senior titles, and 59% of the faculties are below 40 years old. To meet development demands of teaching and research, SCET sets a team for bachelor teaching and 21 academic teams. There are six SCUT-famous teachers and two Guangdong-famous teachers.

Committed to SCUT motto -- 'Study Extensively, Reflect Carefully, Discriminate Clearly, Practice Earnestly', SCET, known as a cradle of entrepreneurs and engineers, strives to nurture talents who are equipped with strong ethics, diverse skills and good adaptation. It works to turn its students into well-qualified talents who are expertise in innovative, creative or entrepreneurial practice and with a global vision. SCET also provides a cultivating model of bridging research with industry. At SCET, there are 3620 students, including 232 doctorate candidates, 840 full-time graduates, 475 on-the-job graduates of engineering master degree, 1700 undergraduates and 323 continuing education students. Among its seven majors for undergraduates, two majors are provincial brand majors and one is provincial special major. SCET boasts six SCUT Excellent Courses, five Provincial Excellent Courses and a National Excellent Course. It has formed a complete personnel training system from bachelor’s degree to doctor’s degree.

Thanks to the 211 Project, the 985 Project, and State Key Laboratory of Subtropical Building Science, the scientific research capacity of SCET is stronger than before, with multiple disciplines and majors, and integration of basic study, application research and new development. It owns 11 scientific research centers funded by SCUT or itself, two Guangzhou-city level platforms of industrial institutes, five provincial bases of scientific research, and a state key laboratory (co-building).

In 2013, it won three second prizes and two third prizes of Provincial Scientific and Technological Progress Award, 51 authorized patents and software copyrights. SCET faculties and students published 244 papers, and 221 of them were indexed by SCI, EI, and ISTP (in 2012). SCET obtained 274 projects of scientific research, with 85,010,000 RMB funds. And in 2014, 19 projects of SCET are funded by National Natural Science Foundation of China, with 13,140,000 RMB funds.

SCET strives to make more communication and cooperation with world-famous universities and enterprises. Its undergraduates can get a double degree at University of Edinburgh or University of Birmingham (2+2), or can be a combined bachelor-master's degree program student at The University of Queensland, University of Western  Australia, or the University of Missouri (3+1+1), or have short-term exchange programs at University of Birmingham, the Unive rsity of New South Wales, and universities at Taiwan. SCET graduate students can be sponsored by government to study at the University of New South Wales or the Delft University of Technology, or can have short-term exchange programs at Pittsburgh State University or universities at Taiwan. Teachers can go abroad for academic exchange, international conferences, and trainings, or work with foreign experts who come to SCET for lectures, teaching, or scientific collaboration, or take part in the cooperation between SCET and foreign universities, institutes or enterprises.
