Dr Xu had been affiliated as Lecturer(from 1991 - 1995) and as Professor (from 1999 - 2005) at Central South University, and he had been working in Mining Engineering and Urban Underground Space Engineering for sixteen years there. Then, as Professor, he joined in the Road and Railway Engineering team of South China University of Technology in December of 2005, and now he is an essential member of the team. From 2006 - 2007, as a visiting scholar, he had been working at McGill University for one year.
