  讲座一:
  Biological treatment systems have been used to treat municipal wastewater for at least 50 years. These systems are not used often to treat industrial waste due to misconceptions about the processes and organisms involved. This presentation will summarize the basics of biological treatment systems and present a specific example of the use of an anaerobic system to convert the energy in the organic material in winery wastewater to methane gas that can be used as a fuel for heating or power generation.
  讲座二:
  Nitrate contamination of groundwater from the overuse of fertilizer in agriculture or from improper disposal of municipal or industrial waste is a problem worldwide. Perchlorate is an industrial contaminant used in military ordinance, fireworks, and automobile air bags. It can be found in groundwater near production plants and near disposal facilities.
  High intake of nitrate causes different health issues, most importantly methemoglobinemia, a condition where the blood cannot carry oxygen. To limit the risk to human health, the maximum acceptable concentration of nitrate in drinking water is set to be 45 mg /L as nitrate by USEPA. Perchlorate is known to inhibit the production of hormones from the thyroid gland. This affects all metabolic processes. 
  This research presentation summarizes 15 years of research in the development of a technology to remove nitrate and perchlorate from contaminated groundwater. The technology combines the use of ion exchange processes to remove perchlorate and nitrate from drinking water with a biological treatment step to allow reuse of regenerant brine or direct regeneration of the resin. The presentation will include microbiological investigations as well as mathematical modeling of the chemical and biological reactions.
  报告人简介:
  Dr. Deborah Roberts,加拿大英属哥伦比亚大学(University of British Columbia,UBC)教授,博士生导师。1985年本科毕业于加拿大阿尔伯塔大学微生物专业,并于1990年获得微生物专业博士学位。1989年至1992年,在美国爱达荷大学进行博士后研究。1992年至2006年于休斯敦大学任教,2006年至今受聘于英属哥伦比亚大学,担任工程学院应用工程系教授。
  主要研究领域:采用离子交换/生物联合法去除污水中的高氯酸盐及硝酸盐,同时在研究过程中发现新型耐盐机制;研究一种新型实时传感器用于检测水中病原体。Roberts教授已发表了50多篇国际杂志、会议论文,参编出版6部国际著作,获得专利3项。
