Lignocellulosic biomass is the most abundant renewable organic material that has the potential to support large s-cale production of fuels and chemicals. Its unit cells consist of cellulose, hemicelluloses and lignin intertwined phy-sically and chemically in a very complex form. The recalcitrant nature of hemicelluloses and lignin hinders hydrol-ysis of cellulose into fermentable reducing sugars. The presence of lignin and hemicelluloses restricts the acces-sibility of cellulose to the enzymes. Therefore pretreatment of lignocellulose to render cellulose accessible to mic-roorganisms is a critical step in the conversion of biomass to ethanol indeed. In this presentation, some of pretre-atment methods, specifically their pros and cons will be discussed.
