Abstract:

The world today faces problems such as geopolitical conflicts, war, climate change, inequality and poverty, public health, and human rights which are interwoven with significant transformations in economic, social and technological realms. Numerous stakeholders, institutions and organisations at the local, regional and global levels are striving for influencing public opinion and decision-makers for the purpose of impacting the public agenda and legitimizing collective action. While previous studies have examined stakeholder engagement in connection with sustainable development, they have overlooked the role of public participation and collective action. To address global challenges effectively, we need to identify alternative types of research questions and non-traditional research methods while promoting interdisciplinary research and cross-sectoral partnerships.
