Outline
The Department of Industrial Equipment and Control is one of the three founding units of SMAE. Approximately 550 graduate students study in the school, including 441 full-time students, and 109 part-time students working full-time in industry. In addition, there are approximately 1600 undergraduate students enrolled in the corresponding majors.
The number of faculty members in the school is 23, including 5 professors, 15 associated professors and higher engineers. The faculty are divided into 4 parts, Process Equipment, Safety Engineering, Corrosion and Protection for Materials and Oil & Gas Storage and Transportation.
The department aims to maintain the close symbiosis between education and research, in order to ensure that a degree in mechanical engineering awarded by SCUT continues to be highly regarded and respected.
There are 2 majors for undergraduate students in the Institute. Besides,the institute offers one PhD program and 3 Master programs. The goal of our academic programs is to provide students with a balance of intellectual and practical experiences that enable them to address a variety of societal needs.Our programs at the undergraduate level prepare students for entry-level work as processing equipment and safety engineers, or for graduate study in engineering or in another discipline where a fundamental engineering background constitutes a desirable foundation. At the graduate level we align academic course work with research, to prepare scholars in specialized areas within the field of process equipment, safety engineering and Oil & Gas Storage and Transportation.
Research and Development
Research topics in the Institute focus on industrial needs and contribute to economic and social development. Energy, safety, environment conscious and advanced manufacturing technology has been a long pursuit of our research. The large number of research projects guarantees a representation of the up-to-date status of research which is also beneficial to the innovation education of students. Several research laboratories in our school have acquired high reputation for excellence.
• Process Equipment Science & Engineering
Group of Process Equipment Science and Engineering seeks the possibility to develop new disciplines for interpretation of materials ageing and structural durability, and strengthen the researches for high technology in energy and chemical conversion. In the fundamental research the division focuses on the development of an interdiscipline - “Chemechanics” which studies the chemical and mechanical effect in nature, aiming at the solution of materials ageing, chemical degradation, concrete durability and so on. In the technology fields, the division develops the green manufacturing technology, which includes the reliability centered remanufacture, energy and environment related advanced manufacturing technology.
• Process Equipment Materials & Processing
The scientific research areas in the Group of Process Equipment Materials & Processing Division mainly concentrated on the corrosion and protection of the process equipment materials, advanced manufacturing method of composite materials and the application of non-metallic material in the process machine and equipment, the properties of the sealing materials and the development of the sealing materials and products, the sealing design methods and performance parameters, the failure analysis of sealing device and system, the on-line corrosion supervision of process equipment, plastic processing machines, etc. The distinct feature has been formed in the related research areas.
• Safety Technology
The research in the Group mainly cover the following fields:
Methodology for evaluating urban and regional disaster carrying capacity and its application;
Emergency response and monitor of potential hazardous in major industrial accidents;
Methodology on Safety Management of Hazardous Chemicals;
Characteristic simulation of dynamic risk prediction and explosive accidents of LPG tank;
Integrated safety management decision-making support system of industry manufacture;
Research activities in the Group are also focusing on the frontiers of surface science and engineering, corrosion science that are related to metal corrosion mechanism, corrosion monitoring, corrosion analysis, materials protection, and water treatment.
• Oil & Gas Storage and Transportation
Group of Oil and Gas Storage and Transportation offers Master program in 2 fields: Oil and Gas Storage and Transportation Engineering, Oil and Gas Safety Technology.
Studies are carried out in fields of condensable and viscous crude oil, Non-Newtonian fluid and rheological characteristics, Non-Newtonian pipe flow, multiphase pipe flow in water and gas pumping, and equipment and media corrosion. The subjects mainly deal with oil and gas gathering and transferring and long-distance transportation technology, including oil and gas gathering and transferring, long-distance pipeline transportation, stress of tank and pipeline and security technology, optimization of oil and gas production and marketing system and artificial intelligent decision-making technology. There are four research fields, long-distance pipeline transportation and urban distribution, multi-phase pipeline flow and oil and gas collection and transportation, transportation safety engineering and transportation work technology.
• Fluid Machinery and Engineering
Studies in the Group of Fluid Machinery and Engineering are carried out in fields of condensable and viscous crude oil, Non-Newtonian fluid and rheological characteristics, Non-Newtonian flow, multiphase flow in pumping and equipment. The Group involves simultaneous solution of momentum, heat, and mass transfer problems in various industrial fields by applying computational Fluid Dynamics techniques. These studies would finally benefit to optimal design and operation in the fields. The major topics include:
1. Gas-liquid two-phase flow in liquid-ring pump
2. Unsteady flow in rotary machinery using dynamic mesh technique
3. Two-phase mixing process or separation process
4. High Mach air jet from a nozzle.
