About the School

The School of Mechanical and Automotive Engineering , of the South China University of Technology (SCUT) has been proudly delivering World class engineering education since its creation in 1952. In January 2008, the amalgamations of the College of Mechanical Engineering, College of Automotive Engineering, and College of Industrial Equipment and Control Engineering, permitted us to focus more on the core mechanical and automotive engineering education and research under our current name, School of Mechanical & Automotive Engineering (SMAE). Over the past 65 years, especially after SCUT was selected among the nation’s key universities under the National Education Development Plans of China, namely, 'Project 211 for Higher Education' and 'Project 985 for World-class University', the School of Mechanical & Automotive Engineering has been leading developments in innovative curricula, and research in many cutting edge technologies. The school continues to be among the leaders in Mechanical & Automotive Engineering education in China. Our students are stimulated by the challenges of our intense curriculum, which is continuously renewed to ensure a competitive advantage for our graduates in the workplace.

With its continued commitment towards core as well as interdisciplinary education, and advancement of research in cutting-edge technologies, the school has grown into  8 academic institutes/departments and research centers. These include the Department of Mechanical Manufacturing Engineering, Department of Mechatronics Engineering, Department of Mechanics, Department of Automotive Engineering  Department of Industrial Equipment and Control,  Institute of Metallic Materials Making and Shaping,  Institute of Polymer Materials Making and Shaping, and  the Industrial Training Center. These academic units work in a highly cohesive manner to fulfil our education and research missions, which are driven by the efforts of our 66 full professors and 107 associate professors, and a well-qualified administrative and support staff team. The research and development activities of the school are also supported by a large number of post-doctoral fellows, visiting scientists and exchange scholars. The school has developed state-of-the-art teaching laboratories to deliver high quality practical education to our students, which are supported by our many technical staff members. Currently the SMAE is widely recognized not only as a well reputed center for high level research, but also as the leading higher education and training base in the south China region in the fields of mechanical and automotive engineering.
