The School of Mechanical and Automotive Engineering is located on the west lake of Wushan Campus, South China University of Technology. It was established in January 2008 by merging three schools: the School of Mechanical Engineering, the School of Industrial Equipment and Control Engineering, and the School of Automotive Engineering. It is one of the largest schools in South China University of Technology. The School has a long history, dating back to the establishment of the Department of Mechanical Engineering in the Guangdong Provincial First Industrial School (known as Red A-level School) in 1918.
The School consists of seven departments: Mechanical Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Science, Automotive Engineering, Industrial Equipment and Control Engineering, Polymer Materials Advanced Manufacturing Technology and Equipment Research Institute, and Metal Material Preparation Forming and Equipment Research Institute. It also has nine innovative research centers: Advanced Manufacturing Technology for Polymer Intelligence, Precision Equipment and Intelligent Robots, Intelligent Electric Vehicles, Industrial Artificial Intelligence, Intelligent Measurement and Control and High-end Equipment, Laser and Additive Manufacturing, Functional Structure and Device High Performance Manufacturing, Industrial Software, Smart Safety and Emergency Innovation. The School has nearly 40000 square meters of teaching, scientific research, and office space, as well as nearly 20000 scientific instruments and equipment. It has two national engineering research centers, one national engineering laboratory, two national-local joint engineering laboratories, 22 provincial and ministerial-level scientific research bases, three national-level experimental teaching demonstration centers.
The School currently has 293 faculty members, including 88 professors. The School has two education departments' innovative teams, one Chinese Academy of Engineering academician, one national teaching master, one Changjiang Scholar Prize winner, two National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars winners, one National Science Fund for Excellent Young Scholars winner, one national model teacher, three hundred thousand talents project national-level selectors, 12 cross (new) century talents supported by the Ministry of Education, two National Natural Science Foundation for Outstanding Young Scientists Project (Overseas) winners, one guest expert, one National Science and Technology Leading Talent winner, and one National Youth Top-notch Talent winner. In the past five years, the School has won 21 awards from the state and ministerial-level agencies in various scientific research fields (including three first prizes for provincial-level science and technology awards and seven second prizes), as well as six China Excellent Patent Awards; it has authorized various patents for 2193 items and published 5394 papers indexed by the three major indexes.
The School offers six undergraduate degree programs: Mechanical Engineering (National First-Class Undergraduate Program, National Characteristic Major, Guangdong Province Famous Brand Major), Mechanical Electrical Engineering (National First-Class Undergraduate Program), Vehicle Engineering (Provincial First-Class Undergraduate Program), Process Equipment and Control Engineering (National First-Class Undergraduate Program), Material Forming and Control Engineering (Provincial First-Class Undergraduate Program), and Safety Engineering (National First-Class Undergraduate Program). The School also offers two feature classes: Innovative Class for Mechanical Engineering (master's degree program), and Mechanical Engineering (Excellent双语Class). As of June 2023, the School has successfully passed China's engineering education professional certification in three majors: mechanical engineering, vehicle engineering, and safety engineering. Currently, there are more than 2200 full-time undergraduate students in the School.
The School has three postdoctoral mobile stations in mechanical engineering, materials science and engineering, and engineering thermophysics; it also has three first-level doctoral degree授权programs in mechanical engineering, materials science and engineering, and engineering thermophysics; four academic master's degree授权programs in mechanical engineering, materials science and engineering, safety science and engineering; three professional doctor's degree授权programs in machinery; three full-time master's degree授权programs in materials and chemical engineering resources and environment; there are more than 1600 graduate students in the school.
After years of development, the School has become an important base for cultivating high-level talents in intelligent manufacturing, vehicle and material processing engineering in southern China. The School always adheres to the student-centered educational philosophy and strives to cultivate knowledgeable, skilled, innovative thinking future leaders in related industries with international vision and a sense of social responsibility. At this new historical starting point, the School will uphold the motto of Learning to think carefully before acting, carry forward the spirit of focusing on morality and learning self-improvement innovation achieving excellence, work hard to strive for progress and contribute wisdom.
