Institute of Polymer Materials Making and Shaping  

The Institute of Polymer Materials Processing and Shaping, i.e., National Engineering Research Center of Novel Equipment for Polymer Processing (NERCNEPP) at South China University of Technology, is one of the most important institutes in China, which is an interdisciplinary research-oriented center organized for teaching and research on polymer processing theory, technology and equipment, granting the B.S, M.S, M.Eng and PhD in Polymer Science, Polymer Engineering and Mechanical Design & Theory.

Research interests include the technology and principle of polymer extrusion, mixing, injection molding, blowing molding, calendaring, co-extrusion and reactive forming, focusing on the processing rheology, morphology and property of polymer. The objective of both our academic and research functions is the practical application of scientific and engineering principles to generate new processing concepts, to develop novel technology and equipment and to enhance technical problem solving capabilities related to the production and use of polymers. One breakthrough of our research is on the vibration assisted processing. We successfully apply the vibration field into the full procedure of plasticizing and molding of polymer and creatively propose the concept and principle of dynamic polymer extrusion, mixing and injection molding. And therefore, some significant research achievements have already been reached and be widely recognized.
In the last decade, the NERCNEPP has already undertook and finished over fifty important projects, including the projects of Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), the Key Project of NSFC, the Project for the State Torch Program, The key task project for the National Eighth Five-Year Plan and Ninth Five-Year Plan and Tenth Five-Year Plan, the Project for the National High Technology Research and Development Program of China (863 Program). Over three hundred research papers have already been published. Six invests have already been patented in China, USA, Japan and Europe. Four projects have been successfully commercialized. And ten national awards and provincial awards have been granted.
At present, an interdisciplinary research-oriented team of twenty five faculty including 6 professors and 5 associate professors are working at the center. And 120 postgraduate students are studying and pursuing their advanced degrees under the guiding of their tutors. The instrumentation available to students and staff include Brabender Plasti-corder Polymer processing station, Fourier-transform infrared, FTIR, DSC, and a Hi-Res thermogravimetric analyzer, TGA, two twin-screw extruders and three injection molding machines.
