Human-Machine Symbiotic Intelligence Research Center

Director: Prof. Siyuan LIU

The Human-Machine SymbioticIntelligence Research Center is a forward-looking institution established inresponse to China's national strategies such as Digital China, ManufacturingPowerhouse, and Rural Revitalization. At its core, the Center focuses on thequestion of “how to innovate intelligent technologies to achieve thesynergistic enhancement of human and machine capabilities.” It is committed toforging a new paradigm of intelligence that will shape the future, serving as acore engine for the leap forward of new-quality productive forces and themodernization of industrial chains.

Professor LIU Siyuan, the Center’sDirector, is the Associate Dean of the School of Business Administration and atenured Full Professor jointly appointed by the School of BusinessAdministration and the School of Future Technology at South China University ofTechnology. His research focuses on the interdisciplinary convergence ofmanagement science, data science, and artificial intelligence. A prolificscholar, he has published a series of influential cross-disciplinary papers intointernational journals and conferences, earning multiple academic awards. Hispolicy reports have received personal instructions from China's top centralleadership and have been adopted numerous times by central governmentministries and provincial departments, highlighting his significant impact onboth academia and public policy.

Under Prof. Liu's leadership, TheCenter is built upon the core concept of Human-Machine Symbiotic Intelligence, transcending the limitations of the traditional AI+ paradigm that treatsartificial intelligence as a mere auxiliary tool within a single process. Itpioneers a higher-order form of intelligence characterized by the deepintegration, mutual enhancement, and co-evolution of human and artificialintelligence. The Center explicitly advocates for three major paradigm shifts:from tool-based empowerment to collaborative co-creation, from one-way input tobi-directional interaction, and from isolated scenarios to solutions that areseamlessly integrated across the entire lifecycle and full industrial chain. Byestablishing a tight closed-loop system ofperception-decision-execution-feedback, the Center not only aims to empowerhumans but to achieve qualitative breakthroughs in innovation, quality, safety, and sustainability, thereby fundamentally reshaping the core competitiveness ofindustrial ecosystems.

Aligned with key strategicimperatives for high-quality development, the Center has systematicallyestablished three core application pillars. In Smart Water Management, weleverage Digital Twin Watersheds + Human-Machine Collaborative Scheduling tobuild an integrated system for flood and drought defense and precise waterresource allocation, creating a new benchmark for resilient, secure, andeco-friendly water governance through a full-chain closed loop from perceptionto response. In Intelligent Healthcare, we focus on explainable AI andhuman-machine collaborative diagnosis, deeply integrating clinical expertisewith machine intelligence to enhance diagnostic accuracy for complex diseasesand the efficiency of personalized intervention planning, setting a model forsmart health that balances medical safety, ethical standards, and serviceefficacy. In FinTech, we implement a mechanism of evaluable and traceablealgorithms + human-machine co-governed risk control to strengthen real-time,dynamic interventions in credit approval, fraud detection, and market analysis, thereby building a transparent, robust, and compliant intelligentdecision-making foundation that comprehensively empowers the real economy andregional high-quality development.

The Center adheres to an integratedfour-in-one development path of fundamental research, technologicalbreakthroughs, scenario validation, and ecosystem cultivation, underpinned by adeeply collaborative government-industry-academia-research-user mechanism. Weare building an open, shared computing infrastructure and interdisciplinaryjoint laboratories. Concurrently, we are advancing intelligent ethics reviewand standardization systems to ensure all algorithms operate within a frameworkof trustworthiness, controllability, and traceability, guaranteeing technologyfor good and value co-creation. Looking ahead, the Human-Machine SymbioticIntelligence Research Center will continue to deepen its mechanisms forbi-directional human-machine collaboration, using real-time iteration and deepco-creation to redefine paradigms of production and decision-making. Ourmission is to become a global source of innovation, a standard-setter, and apowerful industry-enabling platform in the field of human-machine symbioticintelligence, injecting enduring momentum into the construction of a modernindustrial system and the advancement of high-level openness, jointly chartinga grand vision for human-machine co-prosperity and high-quality development inthe intelligent era.
