In 2004, with the support of the Economic and Trade Commission of Guangdong Province and SCUT, the team led by Professor Zhu Guilong established the Research Center of Technological Innovation Assessment, the first institute focused on innovation management in South China. In 2015, researchers of the Center successfully applied for a provincial natural science fund project with the topic of “Innovation-driven Development in Transformation of Guangdong: Strategy and Path”.

There are 8 full-time and 8 part-time members in the research team of the Center. Among them, there are five professors and 8 associate professors. The center consists of two departments, the Management Consulting Department and the Research Department, which conducts theoretical and applied research on technological innovation systems and innovation policies for governments, enterprises, and institutions, as well as technical innovation project evaluation, management, and information consultation.

The team of innovation management and research, led by Professor Zhu, has now become one of the few teams making long-term efforts on the issue of innovation-driven development in South China. Since its establishment, the Center has received strong support from the Guangdong Provincial Economic and Trade Commission, and has successively undertaken the fifth (2003), sixth (2004), seventh (2005), and eighth (2006) year’s tasks on evaluating provincial-level enterprise technology centers in Guangdong Province, as well as the annual evaluation task of the provincial-level enterprise technology center in Guangdong Province. In addition, it has undertaken and completed the general framework of the 11th Five-Year Science and Technology Development Plan of Guangzhou, the specific research on the 11th Five-Year Development Plan of Science and Technology in Guangdong Province, and the Research Work of Guangdong Provincial Independent Innovation Development.

After years of development, the team has now developed its own characteristics in collaborative innovation, environmental innovation and so on, and is greatly influential in the country. At the same time, it actively serves the practice of innovation-driven development in Guangdong. The team is also dedicated to the innovation-driven practice and serves as an important research team of government departments, including Guangdong Provincial Department of Science and Technology, the Economic & Information Commission of Guangdong Province and so on, and takes part in research efforts of key innovation policies.
