The Greater Bay Intelligent Finance and Risk ManagementResearch Base is a provincial-level key humanities and social sciences researchplatform under Guangzhou Municipality.
Established in July 2015 and renamed during its fourthdevelopment cycle, the Base was included in the Chinese Think Tank Index (CTTI)in December 2018 and continues to play a vital role in advancing financialresearch and policy support for the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area.It focuses on financial innovation, risk management, and financial support forthe real economy within the context of the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao GreaterBay Area.
Under the leadership of Director Professor Weijun XU of theSchool of Business Administration at South China University of Technology, theBase has cultivated a high-caliber interdisciplinary team. Its core membersinclude 45 researchers, among them national-level talents, recipients of theNational Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, Zhujiang ScholarDistinguished Professors, and principal investigators of major nationalprojects. Notable chief experts include Professor Weiguo Zhang, Dean ofShenzhen University and former Dean of SCUT Business School; ProfessorXiaoguang Yang from the Chinese Academy of Sciences; and Mr. Qing Wu, VicePresident of the Guangzhou Academy of Social Sciences.
The Base focuses on critical areas such asfinancial engineering, risk management, green finance, fintech,industrial-financial integration, and strategic emerging industries within theGreater Bay Area context. Over the years, it has secured more than 200 researchprojects with total funding exceeding RMB 50 million, including prestigiousgrants like the NSFC Innovative Research Group Project, NSFC Major and KeyProjects, and National Social Science Fund Major Projects. Its scholars havepublished over 300 papers in top-tier journals such as INFORMS Journal onComputing, European Journal of Operational Research, Nature Communications, andManagement World, and have received numerous awards, including seven from theMinistry of Education and 18 from Guangdong Province for outstandingachievements in philosophy and social sciences. Beyond academia, the Base hasmade significant policy contributions: over 100 of its internal reports havebeen adopted by central and provincial authorities, prompting more than 40instructions from national and provincial leaders. It has also authoredGuangzhou’s annual financial development reports and contributed to theGuangdong Development Blue Book on carbon peak and neutrality goals. Equippedwith advanced data resources like the Wind Database, a robust digitalinformation network, and high-performance computing facilities, the Base hastrained over 300 PhD and master’s graduates who now serve in academia,financial institutions, and leading enterprises across the Greater Bay Area,reinforcing its mission of integrating research, education, and real-worldimpact.
