The International School of Advanced Materials is part of the Promotion Program of International Schools for Higher Education in China, which was co-launched by the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs of China (SAFEA) and the Ministry of Education (MOE) in 2013. The Promotion Program supports universities in establishing their own international schools by introducing international faculty members led by an internationally renowned dean, as well as a set of special academic policies that encourage international collaboration. The program helps Chinese universities implement an innovative model of development in higher education, research, and administration, incorporating Western higher education practices into China, thus developing a modern and unique approach to Chinese higher education. By 2016, there were 16 schools authorized under this program on various subjects in top universities across China.
Our International School of Advanced Materials is built on the academic strength of the School of Materials Science and Engineering (SMSE), which is part of South China University of Technology (SCUT). SMSE conducts research in the fields of optoelectronic materials and devices, special glass fiber materials and lasers, electronic materials, functional polymers, rubber and plastics, ceramics and concrete, biomedical materials, and so on. It boasts the State Key Laboratory of Luminescent Materials and Devices, a National Engineering Research Center, an International Joint Lab of MOE, and 20 Ministerial- and Provincial-Level International Joint Laboratories/Key Laboratories/Engineering Laboratories/Technical Research Centers. In 2018, SMSE had more than 700 SCI papers published in top journals including Nat. Photonics, Prog. Mater. Sci., Adv. Mater., Small, APL, J. Am. Ceram. Soc., J. Am. Chem. Soc., Angew Chem., and many others. It has also obtained scientific research funds collectively worth around 31 million USD as well as 284 authorized patents in 2018.
Our newly established International School consists of an international faculty. 50% of our staff are overseas experts and academics with education, teaching and research experience from top universities, including Cambridge, Imperial College London, North-western University, and others. Based upon the Materials Science and Engineering degree program, the International School has two joint programs: the Joint Bachelor's and Master's Degree Program and the Joint Bachelor's and PhD Degree Program. All programs are designed to train students in gaining a profound knowledge of scientific theories, excellent skills in professional practices, enhancing innovation and competence, independent research abilities, international competitive strength，forging an enterprising spirit and a global vision. In order to achieve these goals, the International School has introduced a curriculum based upon course structures from famous international universities, with all major courses taught in English.
