School of Materials Science and Engineering (hereinafter called SMSE), with a history dating back to the 1950s, is developed from the traditional advantage majors in South China Institute of Technology (predecessor of SCUT). After decades of development, SMSE is now composed of several parts: 6 Departments, 5 Institutes, 1 State Key Laboratory (State Key Laboratory of Luminescent Materials and Devices), 1 National Engineering Research Center (National Engineering Research Center for Tissue Restoration and Reconstruction), 22 Ministerial- and Provincial-Level International Collaborated Laboratories/Key Laboratories/Engineering Laboratories/Technical Research Centers, one National Demonstration Center for Experiment Teaching (Experiment Teaching Center for Materials Science and Engineering), 1 National Virtual Simulation Experiment Teaching Center for Luminescent Materials and Devices, and 1 International School of Advanced Materials.
We have two doctoral programs of first-level disciplines: Materials Science and Engineering (national key discipline) and Biomedical Engineering. In 2017, Materials Science and Engineering was selected in the list of first-class disciplines in China’s “Double First-Class” university project.
The School currently boasts 213 full-time teachers, among whom 110 are professors. The faculty are recognized experts in their fields and research groups are led by renowned academicians, distinguished young scholars and prestigious experts. Eight scientists were selected as World's Highly Cited Researchers by Clarivate Analytics. More than eight scientists of the faculty members serve as editor-in-chief, or associate editors of international journals such as Journal of Materials Chemistry Frontiers, Aggregate, Organic Electronics, Science Bulletin, Journal of Semiconductors, Nanomaterials and others. One Professor serves on the committee of the Comité International Permanent pour la Recherche sur la Préservation des Matériaux (COIPM). Another Professor serves as a Chairman for Society for Information Display (SID) in the Greater China region. Furthermore, two faculty members were recognized by Outstanding Teaching Award in Guangdong Province.
SMSE has a current enrollment of 3203 students, including 1571 undergraduate students, 1168 graduate students and 464 Ph.D candidates. The students have won recognition for having high standards of intellect, inquisitiveness, research resourcefulness and integrity. SMSE provides students with a comprehensive education that fosters originality, innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship. More than 75% of the doctoral students and 70% of the postgraduates are enrolled from universities under Double First-class initiative, which are top universities in China. There are also master students from Oxford University, the University of New South Wales, and others. We promote exchange programs for students to broaden and enrich their international experiences. A large number of students study at famous universities in the U.S. and Europe for summer sessions. SMSE prepare students for a range of careers in industry, research, and the academic world and our alumni are contributing excellent work in academia and other fields.
4. Scientific Achievements
Faculty members work on a wide variety of topics including Material Physics and Chemistry, Polymer Materials and Processing Engineering, Photoelectric Materials, Metal Materials and Processing Engineering, and Inorganic Non-metallic Materials. SMSE is known for its outstanding scientific research strength and achievements, which can be reflected by its more than 30 scientific awards, including 2 Second Prizes of the National Natural Science Award, 2 Second Prizes of the National Technological Innovation Award, 2 First Prize of Natural Science in Colleges and Universities of the Ministry of Education, 2 First Prize for Technical Invention in Colleges and Universities of the Ministry of Education and 9 First prizes in Science and Technology of Guangdong.
5. Domestic and International Influences
SMSE has hosted seven high-level international/bilateral academic conferences since 2016. One of them was the 2016 International Conference on Synthetic Metal Science and Technology (ICSM), the oldest and largest conference in the field of organic optoelectronics. More than 1,400 experts and scholars participated in the conference from 35 countries or/and autonomous regions, and the scientists from SMSE served as the chairmen of the conference, reflecting the international academic status and influence of SMSE. Moreover, SMSE was invited to host the 20th International Congress on Marine Corrosion and Fouling (ICMCF) in 2019. This is the first time that the conference was held in China since it was established in 1964. In 2020, SMSE organized the 2020 China Display Academic Conference and conducted cutting-edge academic and technical exchanges in the fields of liquid crystal display, OLED display, laser display and electric paper display with more than 500 participants.
SMSE has been recognized for its excellence in research and teaching. In recent years, SMSE is rapidly rising on the list of internationally recognized rankings. According to the Essential Scientific Index (ESI) published in September 2020, SMSE was ranked 36th worldwide by research fields. According to Shanghai Ranking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects, SMSE has moved up from 101-150th in 2017 to 37th in 2020, rising about 100 places, and it also has been ranked in the top 3 in China for 4 consecutive years.
