The Great Gatsby

The story is written in the first person angle of Nick Carraway , who comes to the west to learn the bond business and  rents a house in West Egg, Long island. His next---door neighbor is a mysterious man named Jay Gatsby, who is a millionaire. On one occasion, he is invited to Gatsby’s party, and from then on he involves in the life of Gatsby, his cousin Daisy and her husband Tom.

Gatsby has been in love with Daisy before he joined the army in the World War 1. Later, she married Tom Buchanan because of his wealth. Five years later, Gatsby comes back and become rich. He is still deeply in love with Daisy and his extravagant lifestyle and wild parties are simply attempts to impress her. Besides, Tom has a lover named Myrtle Wilson. Gatsby wants Nick to arrange a reunion between himself and Daisy. And after Nick’s help, they reestablish their connection and even begin an affair.

However, Daisy is no longer the old one anymore. She is not the pure and lovely girl whom Gatsby dreamed of, but a foolish, selfish, vulgar yet beautiful body. When Tom finds out that Daisy and Gatsby are in love, he is outraged. He confronts Gatsby and says that Gatsby is a criminal because his fortune is from bootlegging, alcohol and other illegal activities. He believes that his relationship with Daisy is beyond anything that Gatsby could imagine. On the way from New York to Long Island, Daisy travels with Gatsby. Their car runs over and kills Tom’s lover Myrtle. It was Daisy who’s driving the car after alcohol, but Gatsby covers for her and takes the blame. Moreover, evil Daisy plots with husband to frame Gatsby.

Tom tells Myrtle’s husband George that the car owner is Gatsby and misleads George to convince that Gatsby has an affair with his wife. In the meantime, poor Gatsby realizes that his beautiful dream is broken, but he is still hoping against hope that Daisy would save him. As a result, Wilson broke into Gatsby’s house and shoots Gatsby and then himself.

The novel reveals the cruel reality in the 1920’s America. Everybody lives in a extremely gainful world. People would do anything for profit. Daisy, who is the typical example, married Tom for fortune, return to Gatsby for fortune, and finally betrayed Gatsby for her selfishness. She is an evil woman, but in fact, also a product of such abnormal society. The author gives us a classical work and invokes our thinking of the world.
