The book “New Lease on Love”, written by Shannon Waverly, was a modern novel that my intensive English teacher lent to me. The book was not classic one, but it has a long history, published in 1991 with yellow pages.
Open the book, the story was as follows: The heroine Chelsea was a businesswoman who run a hot-air balloon flight company by herself at the Pine Ridge Ski area, which was owned by an old man. Chelsea was not only a businesswoman, but a warm-hearted woman. She always took the children who were serious ill in the local hospital to a hot-air balloon ride for no other reason than to get their minds off their situation and gave them happy memories and bravery to fight against illness. Things happened with a new lease on the Pine Ridge Ski area.
Chelsea had a new landlord, the hero, Nick, who was attracted by Chelsea at the first time they met by chance, and Chelsea had the same feelings. However, according to the lease, the new landlord Nick had meant to take the Pine Ridge Ski area back to build a new ski travel region, which far be it from Chelsea to accept . On the other hand, nick ’s wife had been dead in a motorcycle accident and his daughter Katie had been badly injured in the accident which caused her to have long-term operations and therapies. Chelsea felt sorry to Katie, so she wanted to take a balloon ride with Katie and bring her happiness, but nick objected strongly that in his opinion hot air balloon was as dangerous as motorcycling and he had the duty to protect Katie. However, love fireworks burnt out in the process of arguing about this problem. But nick, did not acknowledge his love to Chelsea as she shared the same characteristic with his deceased wife, challenging, brave, risky, which accounted for the accident his wife and daughter had. Nick was afraid to get hurt again, afraid to lose again, so he hesitated to accept Chelsea’s love. Another reason for nick’ hesitation to Chelsea’s love was that he had engaged with another woman at that time.
On the contrary, nick’s fiansee was a traditional woman, who would care of him and Katie. At last, he gave up the engagement with his fiansee and made a new life with Chelsea. This is the general story.
To be honest, this story has neither complicated character relationships nor unexpected plots. However, the novelist characterized every people vividly and vervitably. The characters have their own personalities. Chelsea, who had a great enterprise ,was an ambitious successful business woman. She loved hot air balloon riding and could make a living on it by her own. When the business crisis came to her company, she never gave up and faced it strongly. When the man who she loved came to her life, she would love the man from the bottom of her heart. However, the hero, nick, was a man who escape everything that would reminded him of the sad memories in his life. Escape can do nothing. Eventually, he understood that begin new life was the most important, take away sadness but live strongly. So he opened his mind and acknowledged his love to Chelsea .
When I finished reading this book, I find that many people share the same personalities with nick, including me. No one can deny that no body want to get hurt again and again, everyone will protect himself or herself and the people he loved one instinctively. But should we give up any opportunity or chance which can bring us with happiness solely because it will remind us with the past painful memory? My answer is no. If we do, we will only live under the past painful memory and will not enjoy the life. The pursuit of happiness is the right for everyone. Of course we also have the right to give it up. Just like the hero Nick, if he refused Chelsea’s love. But I will not do so. I will strive for my happy life because of my painful past. As the saying goes, yesterday is history. We must face tomorrow optimistically and catch our happy life in time.
The story makes me thinking about love and life. As far as I am concerned , love is pure and noble and the very important part of life. every one in the earth has to live with love. A world without love is terrible. Every one should strive for their own love. And life is not for work, but for love.
