Learning Experience of Harvard Happiness lecture
黄珊珊
As requested, I have seen the videos of positive psychology of Harvard University. The Chinese translation for this series is Class of Happiness, which is very predictable. It is naturally reasoned that if you own a positive psychology, you can always become happy.
When I first started this class, I thought it boring, because of the tone of the lecturer. But when I finished episode one, I was really into this course. It gave me plenty of tips for pursuing happiness. I think they can be categorized into the following 10 suggestions.
To be happy, firstly, we must have faith, both in ourselves and others. If we don’t have faith in ourselves, we can never explore our potential. When we are pursuing our dream, we inevitably meet difficulties, big or small. At some critical moments, we feel lost, frustrated, desperate and about to give up. We can hold on to our dreams only if we have faith in ourselves. If we have the “yes, I can” in our mind, we can pull ourselves out of the difficulties. Moreover, we have to trust others. We have to admit that we may sometimes be set up by others. But these experiences cannot deny the kindness of most of our friends. We need to trust our friends. Only in that case can we live happily and comfortably. If you are always suspicious of others, even your friends, you can never have someone to believe in.
Secondly, we must understand the theory that we all ever fail. Failures are inevitable in one’s life. If we are too obsessed in our failures, we may lose faith in ourselves and others. Failures may be blow for us, but they can definitely teach us things. Every time we tumbled down, there are some reasons. If we can find them out, we won’t make the same mistake again and can further perfect our abilities. It is not overstated that if we never fail, we will never succeed.
Thirdly, in order to become happy, we should take others into consideration. Individualism is not what we should hold up to all the time, because our existences are based upon the people around us. Referring to individualism, I mean being self-center or selfish. If you are totally obsessed by yourselves, you won’t bother to care about others. Then you can only enjoy the happiness of yourselves, not others’. The theory is very simple here. It is natural that you feel joyful when you succeed in doing something, you can have your happiness. But if you care about the people around you, you can even feel happy when they have some progress or success, right?
Another method this lecture reminds me of is opening up you to others. As I mentioned before, there are ups and downs in our lives. When we are feeling depressed and frustrated, we need to find someone to talk to. For most of us, it will be enough to talk to our families or friends. Of course, it works only under the circumstance that you trust your families and friends. When you are in total mess and cannot work this situation out, you may consider talking to a psychiatrist. These experts can give you effective advice of dragging yourselves out of the gloom. If you find yourselves constantly in a bad mood, you may come to them for help. You shouldn’t wait till it’s too late because at that time it would be too difficult for you to become happy again.
It will never be overstated that we should stay optimistic in order to become happy. Optimistic is an attitude towards everything. We cannot change the environment we are in, but we can change ourselves, our attitudes towards the things happening.
Besides, we should sometimes lower our expectations towards our lives. As the lecturer says, all you need to do is to make yourselves known, not approved. You can try your best to accomplish something, but no one can grantee the applause from others. You don’t have to be approved by everyone so as to be happy. Trying your best is all you need to do. Leave the rest alone.
The importance of good health cannot be overemphasized in happiness. Of course, good health cannot guarantee happiness. This is a simple theory. If you have a robust body, it will be easier for you to do plenty of things. If you always suffer from illness, you may not be able to accomplish as many things as healthy people do. In that case, you will lose lots of fun. So if you want to be happy, try to take exercise regularly not only because you can enjoy a healthier body but also because you have relive yourselves and have a lot of fun from those sports you are doing.
Another suggestion given by the lecturer is focusing on one thing. You cannot accomplish one if you are busy working with too many things. Quantity will always affect the performance of quality. In order to make the best of yourselves, you should focus on one thing. When this very one thing gets reward, you will feel rewarded.
At last, I want to talk about my tips for happiness, even though I am not an authority in this field. For me, the most effective way to be happy is doing something you like or falling in love with the things you are doing. You may think the suggestion a dull one because you cannot always get what you want. That’s true. But whenever you have a choice, you should choose something you like. Like the major you are in when you applied for a university, or the boyfriend or girlfriend with whom you will share lives with. Always find out your interest, then you are knocking on the door to happiness.
