Recently, a faculty-student delegation from the National University of Singapore (NUS) visited South China University of Technology (SCUT), engaging in face-to-face exchanges with students and faculty at the Guangzhou International Campus.

During the welcoming ceremony, Vice President LI Weiqing extended a warm welcome to the delegation. She highlighted the geographical proximity, cultural affinity, and historical connections between China and Singapore. Since the signing of a university-level Memorandum of Understanding, witnessed by the education ministers of both countries, SCUT and NUS have deepened collaboration in joint talent cultivation, scientific research, and innovation. Notably, the two institutions will launch new cooperative models in 2025.

LI expressed hope that the visit would allow NUS delegates to fully experience academic environment and cultural heritage of SCUT, fostering stronger ties between the universities and advancing China-Singapore education cooperation and exchanges.

After the welcoming, professors of NUS delivered two academic lectures on climate governance to the event attendees.

Lecture 1: Harnessing New Energy to Combat Climate Change

Associate Prof Dr MAJ (NS) Seah Kar Heng emphasized the urgency of global collaboration in reducing carbon footprints and addressing climate change. He outlined Singapore’s strategies, including carbon taxation and its 2050 net-zero emissions target, while highlighting the pivotal roles of direct air capture technology and sustainable forestry in global decarbonization efforts.

Lecture 2: CO₂ Transport in Subsea Pipelines for Carbon Capture and Storage

Associate Professor Loh Wai Lam explained the principles and global significance of carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology, an increasingly critical emissions reduction tool. Through case studies and data, he showcased Singapore’s research breakthroughs and practical applications in CCS, sparking lively discussions among faculty and students.

The two professors’ insights deepened attendees’ understanding of carbon footprint reduction and inspired active participation in climate governance. This visit reinforced SCUT-NUS collaboration in sustainability research and cultivated a shared commitment to addressing global climate challenges.
