University of Birmingham Delegation Visits SCUT and Signs Agreement on Joint Student Training

On the afternoon of April 17th, Jon Frampton, Deputy Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the University of Birmingham, visited South China University of Technology (SCUT). Vice President Xu Xiangmin welcomed the delegation at the Guangzhou International Campus (GZIC), where they jointly signed a cooperation agreement on joint student training between the two universities.

Xu Xiangmin welcomed Jon Frampton and his delegation, emphasizing that as China's economic resilience and vitality continue to manifest, the pace of China’s opening up in education becomes more solid and rapid. SCUT, especially GZIC, has a stronger demand for international cooperation in the field of emerging engineering disciplines. He expressed the hope that the signing of the agreement for joint student training at GZIC would serve as an opportunity for deeper collaboration in areas such as industry-university-research cooperation, joint doctoral student training, and platform development. Jon Frampton acknowledged the common ground in teaching, research, and talent training between the two universities and expressed a desire to strengthen their friendly cooperation, providing a better platform for exchange between faculty and students.

Following the discussions, a signing ceremony for the joint student training program agreement took place. Both parties committed to maintaining close communication and exploring innovative approaches to education, striving for the unity and integration of teaching and research.

Jon Frampton and his delegation also toured the School of Future Technology at GZIC.


Brief Overview of the University of Birmingham and the Collaboration between the Two Universities

The University of Birmingham, founded in 1900, is a prestigious and influential member of The Russell Group, one of the top university alliances in the UK. As the first Red Brick University in the UK, the University of Birmingham is globally renowned for its excellent teaching quality and research standards. Over its more than 100 years of existence, the university has given birth to 10 Nobel Prize winners, 3 UK prime ministers, and 5 leaders of foreign countries.

SCUT established a collaborative relationship with the University of Birmingham in 2011. Professor Richard Williams, the former Pro-Vice Chancellor, visited multiple times and participated in the World University Presidents Forum during the 60th Anniversary of the founding of SCUT. Since 2013, the two universities have collaborated on joint student training, visiting scholars, and student exchanges, with 85 students from SCUT having studied at the University of Birmingham to date.

According to the newly signed agreement, students from Shien-Ming Wu School of Intelligent Engineering, School of Microelectronics, and School of Future Technology can apply for the 2+2 undergraduate dual-degree program or the 2+3 undergraduate and master's degree program.
