SCUT achieves excellent results again in the global PCT patent applications

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) said in a statement on April 7th that China surpassed the United States in 2019 as the largest source of international patent applications filed with WIPO for the first time. South China University of Technology (SCUT) has been within the top five global education institutions and the top three universities in China for two consecutive years. In 2019, SCUT ranks 5th in global education institutions and 3rd in Chinese universities with 170 applications.

PCT application is a fast and practical way to seek patent protection for an invention simultaneously in a large number of countries, and it is a main embodiment of high-value patents. The WIPO regards the number of PCT application as an important index to evaluate the innovation ability of a country.

SCUT attaches great importance to the work of PCT application that closely focuses on the construction of the university’s superior disciplines, including artificial intelligence, new materials, electronic information and communications, light industry and engineering, food science and engineering, biomedicine and other fields. In the past three years, the university has applied for 435 PCT applications, among which 261 patents have entered in the national phase and 89 patents have been authorized in foreign countries. The number of the patent applications filed in foreign countries increased by 100% year-on-year. The layout of the international patents has obtained positive results.

In addition, the university promotes the commercialization of the scientific and technological achievements and the intellectual property work from a global perspective, and positions high-value patents via the PCT applications in such developed countries as the United States, the European Union, Japan, South Korea and in the South Asian countries along the “Belt and Road” Initiative according to the practical needs, so as to further expand the achievements transformation dimension of high-value patents.

Since the PCT applications of SCUT have penetrated into Europe, the United States and those countries along the “Belt and Road” Initiative, SCUT has successfully exported the LED DC power supply products to Europe and the United States and maintains its advantages of relevant products in the European and American markets. In addition, the transfer of sugar refining patented technology to Burma, the transfer of ethanol the patented technology to Thailand, and the transfer of energy-saving patented technology to Malaysia, have vigorously enhanced the university’s international influence and its ability to serve the “Belt and Road” Initiative, and have realized the industrialization and internationalization of the scientific and technological achievements, which have facilitated SCUT as the lead in serving the “Belt and Road” national strategy among the universities in China.
