SCUT is Selected as the Top 10 National Demonstration Bases for Entrepreneurship and Innovation
Recently, China Association for Science and Technology （CAST）released the assessment results of the 2019 Demonstration Bases for Mass Entrepreneurship and Innovation. With a beautiful score of 85.6 points, South China University of Technology (SCUT) has been selected as one of the top 10 university-centered demonstration bases, together with Tsinghua University, Fudan University, and Harbin Institute of Technology.
It is known that from May to August, 2019, according to the requirements of the State Council, the National Development and Reform Commission and the CAST, together with the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission (SASAC), and the Chinese Academy of Sciences, launched an exhaustive assessment on the 120 demonstration bases for mass entrepreneurship and innovation across the country.
In the Assessment Report on the Construction and Progress of the Demonstration Bases for Entrepreneurship and Innovation in 2019, CAST and SASAC highly confirmed the replicable and expandable experience concluded by SCUT. The university aims to build up a “One university with Three Campuses” innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem, so as to provide students and teachers with comprehensive services, including the industrial and commercial registration, project application, skill training of enterprise management, legal advice and patent agency. SCUT relies on the off-campus National University Park of Science and Technology of SCUT, and successfully applies for special support for commercialization of scientific and technological achievements, and establishes a full-process incubation and transformation chain. The report notes that the Robot Innovation Base actively guides students to apply for patents and promotes the construction of the achievements incubation and transformation system for discipline competitions. In the past four years, the base has applied for 335 national patents and has obtained 27 authorized national invention patents and 119 authorized utility model patents.
Strong atmosphere of entrepreneurship and innovation in SCUT
In addition, the report points out that SCUT plays an active role in the major national strategies, such as the Sic-tech Innovation Corridor and the International Science and Technology Innovation Center in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. The university’s transformation model of science and technological achievements is selected as a typical case of the construction of the national demonstration bases for entrepreneurship and innovation.
In recent years, under the leadership of the CPC SCUT Committee, SCUT has further strengthened the top-level design of the work of innovation and entrepreneurship, and has successively issued more than 20 incentive policies and measures to accelerate the reform and innovation of the mechanism of entrepreneurship and innovation. Now the university has obtained remarkable results in talent cultivation, project incubation and commercialization of scientific and technological achievements, and is highly praised for its characteristic work pattern with excellent systems, great demonstration guidance, and outstanding radiation effect.
Students of SCUT won the second prize in the first China “Internet +” Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition
It’s worth mentioning that 92 students of the Genome Science Innovation Class have published 74 papers in the high-level international journals such as Science and Nature as the joint first authors or corresponding authors. This is hailed as the “SCUT Mode” for the cultivation of excellent innovative talents; SCUT has won 5 gold medals, 14 silver medals and 3 bronze medals in the 5th China College Students' "Internet +" Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, ranking first among the universities in southern China; the student innovation and entrepreneurship incubation base has successively incubated more than 300 projects, of which more than 100 have been registered and put into operation, and nearly 50 projects have been successfully financed. The financing amount of each project has reached 450 million yuan. The total annual turnover of the projects has reached hundreds of millions of yuan.
