On January 4th, Shien-Ming Wu School of Intelligent Engineering of GZIC successfully organized the first Design Expo of emerging engineering education. Tao Shaojing, Deputy Secretary of the CPC SCUT Committee, the Deans or representatives from Shien-Ming Wu School of Intelligent Engineering, Shien-Ming Wu Manufacturing Research Center, Office of Student Affairs and Office of Teaching and Global Affairs attended the event.

Tao Shaojing awarded the certificates to the winners

The Design Expo consisted of two parts, one was the English defenses for courses on the morning and the other was the robot competitions on the afternoon. Tao Shaojing watched the whole process of the events, and communicated with participating staffs, students and their parents. She spoke highly of this Design Expo and appreciated the cultivation concepts and curriculum mode of the school as well.

“A university should be devoted to students’ cultivation, instead of ‘manufacturing’ students”, said by Tao Shaojing when she awarded for the winning team. She pointed that the program designing of the Design Expo has showcased the importance of training the sense of collaboration, the ability for finding and dealing with problems, and promoting the level of innovation and application. While the success of the Design Expo demonstrated that, as one of the emerging engineering schools which were firstly constructed at GZIC, Shien-Ming Wu School of Intelligent Engineering has received a good beginning of exploring andimplementingthe emerging engineering plans. She hoped that the schools at GZIC could insist on cultivating a new generation of global leading talents in innovative engineering and struggling for an innovative education way with characteristics of the new era under the guidence of the “SCUT Emerging Engineering Education F-Plan”.

Scene of the event

It was introduced that Shien-Ming Wu School of Intelligent Engineering conducted a comprehensive exploration on emerging engineering education, including interdisciplinary talents training mode and teaching methods, designing advanced special courses concerning the most advanced development trends of intelligent industries and technologies. “Introduction to Engineering” provided by the school, set as the first professional technology course for undergraduates, adopted the innovative curriculum pattern of English teaching, cross-discipline, multi-courses integrating, combining theories with practice, all-in assessments andall-round evaluations, was regarded as one of the vital approaches for the school’s emerging engineering education. This Design Expo particularly reflected the teaching achievements obtained since the course of “Introduction to Engineering” was provided for over 3 months.
