Zhang Xichun meeting with Tayyeb Shah
On October 29th, the delegation from the University of Western Australia led by Dr. Tayyeb Shah, Executive Vice President of the University of Western Australia, paid a visit to South China University of Technology and was received by Zhang Xichun, Secretary of the CPC SCUT Committee. Both sides had a comprehensive conversation on the construction of the School of Marine Science and Engineering in Guangzhou International Campus. Tao Shaojing, Deputy Secretary of the CPC SCUT Committee, Heads of International Office, Office of Teaching and Global Affairs of GZIC, and School of Civil Engineering and Transportation also attended the meeting.
Secretary Zhang Xichun proposed his idea of in-depth cooperation
At the meeting, Zhang Xichun introduced the latest development of SCUT and the characteristics and highlights of the construction in terms of international top disciplines and the service of the innovative socio-economic development in recent years, and then he specially explained on the construction concept of GZIC: to build up a world-class international campus with local orientation by collaborating with a number of world-class universities in high-level scientific research and talent training.
Zhang Xichun put forward the preliminary plans for the construction schedule and future collaboration mode of the School of Marine Science and Engineering. He pointed out that in order to accelerate the development of marine disciplines, the construction of the School of Marine Science and Engineering should be started as soon as possible. It is necessary to combine the advantages of UWA with the actual development needs of SCUT, and explore an innovative collaboration mode.

Then, both sides conducted a thorough discussion regarding the scale of enrollment, the faculty training, the construction schedule, the construction process, and the collaboration mode of the School of Marine Science and Engineering. Tayyeb Shah said that this was the third official visit conducted by the senior officers of the University of Western Australia this year, which fully reflected the great importance that the UWA renders to the cooperation with SCUT. And through this meeting, Tayyeb Shah had a clearer understanding of the Guangzhou International Campus and the cooperation mode between the two parties. The UWA is willing to deepen and strengthen the ties with SCUT, and continued in-depth cooperation and exchanges in teaching, scientific research and other areas through the joint establishment of the School of Marine Science and Engineering.
In addition, Tayyeb Shah and Tao Shaojing held further talks on the in-depth cooperation in teaching and scientific research between the two universities, and reached a preliminary consensus.
It is known that Tayyeb Shah has served as the Executive Vice President of the University of Western Australia since June, 2019. It is his first visit since his appointment, and also the third official visit planned by the senior officers from the University of Western Australia within this year.
