The latest Nobel Laureate Gregg L. Semenza was conferred as an Honorary Professor of SCUT

On the morning of October 26th, 2019, Gregg L. Semenza, the 2019 Nobel Laureate in Physiology or Medicine, Academician of American Academy of Sciences, Medicine and Arts and Sciences, Professor of the School of Medicine of the Johns Hopkins University, paid a visit to South China University of Technology(SCUT), which was the first stop of his visit to China after winning the prize. In appreciation for his great contributions to the teaching and research at SCUT, he was confered as an Honorary Professor of SCUT. Gao Song, President of SCUT, and Tao Shaojing, Deputy Secretary of the CPC SCUT Committee, met with Professor Semenza at the International Meeting Room in Shaw Building of Humanities, holding an in-depth discussion on the future cooperation.

At the meeting, Gao Song first extended a warm welcome to Professor Semenza, and then introduced the latest development of SCUT. “SCUT is a rare university in China that develops such a close connection with the local social and economic development.” Gao Song said and pointed out that SCUT has been well-known for its engineering research since its establishment. In recent years, the university has made enormous achievements in science, humanities and social science and medicine, becoming a multi-disciplinary, comprehensive research-oriented university.
Gao Song said, Since 2017, the Guangzhou International Campus(GZIC) has been strengthening the discipline deployment of emerging frontiers and cross-cutting research areas, with a scheme of establishing 10 emerging engineering schools and multiple research institutes. Each school will carry out all-round cooperation with the excellent overseas universities. It is hoped that the School of Biomedical Science and Engineering, one of the newly-established schools of GZIC, can obtain more guidance and instructions from Professor Semenza, especially in recommending outstanding young talents to the university. SCUT will also give strong support to Professor Semenza to conduct various collaboration projects in SCUT.”
Professor Semenza looks forward to the future cooperation
“The construction of Guangzhou International Campus is a marvelous plan and idea”, Professor Semenza said and responded that he was very pleased to have already cooperated with the School of Biomedical Science and Engineering in doctoral training, teaching, scientific research, and disease treatment for quite a long time. In the future, he would further cooperate with the school in the field of biomedical sciences and pay regular visits to the campus to facilitate the school’s development in terms of academics, talent training and internationalization. At the same time, Professor Semenza was very interested to visit the Second Affiliated Hospital of SCUT and hoped to apply the research results to the clinical trials.

In order to promote the development of oncology research, the School of Biomedical Science and Engineering, benefited from the GZIC’s innovative mechanism of the introduction and employment of overseas high-level talents, has set up academic cooperation with Professor Semenza and gradually generated good trust and understanding since 2017. Based on such profound friendship, the university cordially invites Professor Semenza to further cooperate in the research of oncology with the team at SCUT. In the next step, he will participate in the construction of the Institute of Oncology with the School of Biomedical Science and Engineering, and visit SCUT on a regular basis.
Professor Semenza was giving an open academic lecture
On the morning of October 27th, Professor Semina gave an open academic lecture entitled “Hypoxia-Inducible Factors in Physiology and Medicine” for the teachers and students of SCUT, to share his latest research results.
In addition, Professor Semenza also visited the School of Medicine, the laboratory of the School of Biomedical Science and Engineering, and had a close exchange with the teachers and students present.
