Delegation of SCUT Visited Universities in Belgium and England

From July 2nd to July 9th, Tao Shaojing, Deputy Secretary of the CPC SCUT Committee, led a delegation to visit the Ghent University, KU LeuvenCatholic University of Leuven, the University of Edinburgh and the University of Oxford, and signed three university-level Memoranda of Understanding (MoU).

Prof. Ignace Lemahieu, Vice President of Ghent University, met with Tao Shaojing, introducing the development and international cooperation of Ghent University. Tao Shaojing also introduced the development of SCUT and the construction of the Guangzhou International Campus, and renewed the university-level MoU with Ghent University on behalf of SCUT, explicitly expanding the areas of cooperation to the schools and majors of the Guangzhou International Campusincluding faculty mutual visit, students exchange and scientific & technical collaborations.

Professor Peter Lievens, Vice President of KU Leuven, attended the signing ceremony of the MoU between SCUT and KU Leuven. He expressed his admiration for the rapid development of SCUT, especially its great achievements in the construction of Guangzhou International Campus, and pointed out that the two universities are highly complementary in the field of engineering, and he has high expectations for the cooperation between the two universities. Tao Shaojing said KU Leuven is a highly reputed Belgian institution of higher education and one of the founding members of the League of European Research Universities (LERU). Ku Leuven is also a world-renowned research-led university, especially in the field of engineering research. And likewise, SCUT ranks 22nd in the world for engineering research. It is hoped that the two universities can sign a university-level cooperation agreement as soon as possible based on the MoU so as to facilitate the bilateral cooperation. Professor Ir. Bert Lauwers, Dean of the School of Engineering and Science, said that KU Leuven will map out the details of cooperation as soon as possible, and the signing of the university-level cooperation agreement will be completed when they visit SCUT next spring.

Professor James Smith, Vice President of the University of Edinburgh, extended a warm welcome to the delegation led by Tao Shaojing. He said the University of Edinburgh regards SCUT as one of the international strategic partners, and he deemed that the two universities have obtained remarkable achievements in their cooperation with respect to the "2+2" Dual-Degree Graduate Program, the "4+1" Bachelor-master Degree Program and university-level academic exchange. Tao Shaojing stated that the two universities have been cooperating for many years, and SCUT always attaches great importance to the cooperation with the University of Edinburgh.Up to the year of 2019, more than 200 students have been sent to the University of Edinburgh for the "2+2" joint training program. And the signing of this MoU is to further deepen the cooperation with the University of Edinburgh and expand the scope of cooperation to the Guangzhou International Campus. Professor James Smith also agreed with this.

Professor Sam Howison, Minister of Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences Division (MPLS) of University of Oxford, accompanied by Professor Michael Bonsall, Deputy Minister of MPLS, and Professor Mike Moloney from the Department of Chemistry, met with Tao Shaojing. Professor Sam Howison agreed to further strengthen the cooperation between the professors of the two universities based on the existing collaboration on Summer Camp Program, and welcomed the excellent students of SCUT to study for master and doctoral degrees at University of Oxford. Tao Shaojing said that SCUT will continue to select excellent students to participate in the summer camp project held at University of Oxford, continue to recommend outstanding undergraduates to the university to study for graduate degrees, and invite professors from University of Oxford to visit SCUT and participate in the international summer course program to be hosted by SCUT next year.

During the visit, Tao Shaojing and the delegation also visited the IMEC, the largest independent research center in micro- and nano-electronics in Europe, and met with the overseas students of SCUT who participated in the "2+2" exchange project and chairperson of the British Alumni Association in the University of Edinburgh.
