SCUT is looking forward to boosting ties with partners in Western Australia, after a delegation consisting of high-ranking officials of the government and universities of Western Australia visited SCUT on last Friday and signed two cooperation agreements.

Among 18 delegates were Suzanne Ellery, Western Australia’s Minister for Education and Training, Rob Delane, Western Australia’s Deputy Director General of International Education, Trade and Investment, Dawn Freshwater, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Western Australia (UWA), and Deborah Terry, Vice-Chancellor of Curtin University.

The guests were received by Zhang Xichun, Secretary of the CPC SCUT Committee, Yu Qijun, Deputy Secretary of CPC SCUT Committee, and Qiu Xueqing, Vice-President of SCUT, at the Shaw Building of Humanities.

Zhang Xichun extended welcome to the delegates, who paid this visit just a few days before SCUT’s 65th anniversary. He then presented a detailed introduction on SCUT’s progress in managing higher education, its distinguishing features in student training, scientific research, and technology transfer, its collaboration with partners in Australia, and the progress in building the Guangzhou International Campus.

He indicated that the international campus program, with solid supports from the Ministry of Education and governments of Guangdong province and Guangzhou, is creating a new stage for SCUT to explore high-quality international collaboration. He expected to see SCUT intensifying the partnership with UWA in all aspects, while SCUT is open to cooperation with other universities in Western Australia.

Suzanne Ellery expressed that the government of Western Australia greatly values its relationship and cooperation with China, and for that reason, the delegation’s visit to China was a first priority after Western Australia held its latest election in 2017.

Speaking highly of SCUT’s achievements of development, she expressed full support for a more extensive and thorough partnership between UWA and SCUT.

After discussing key issues concerning the international campus program and the Sino-Australia College program, the two universities signed the Agreement for A Study Abroad Program between SCUT and UWA, and the Letter of Intent between SCUT’s School of Medicine and UWA’s Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences.

A work meeting was also held earlier, when Yu Qijun, Qiu Xueqing and UWA’s delegates talked over setting up the School of Ocean Science and Engineering at the Guangzhou International Campus.

Established in 1911, the University of Western Australia is a research-intensive university and a member of the Group of Eight in Australia. Its main campus is in Perth, capital of Western Australia, which is the largest state in the country. In 2017, UWA was ranked 95th by the U.S. World News and Report’s “Best Global Universities” rankings, and 91st by Shanghai Ranking Consultancy’s “Academic Ranking of World Universities”.

Since 2005, SCUT has been working with UWA and Curtin University to run a training center that has trained nearly 20,000 professionals in natural gas management and technology. During recent years, SCUT has advanced its partnership with UWA by co-establishing the Joint Centre for Regenerative Medicine Research and the Sino-Australia College, with the School of Ocean Science and Engineering now being planned.
