The Key Laboratory of Pollution Control and Ecological Restoration in Industrial Clusters of the Ministry of Education was officially approved by the Ministry of Education in December 2008. In April 2009, the laboratory construction plan was approved by the Ministry of Education. In May 2011, the laboratory passed the construction inspection by the expert group of the Ministry of Education. In December 2015, the laboratory successfully passed the expert evaluation of the Ministry of Education.
The laboratory centers around the key scientific and technological problems about industrial clusters pollution control and ecological restoration,, and has formed distinct characteristics in four research directions, including industrial wastewater treatment and reuse, industrial waste gas purification, dispose and resource utilization of industrial waste, industrial pollution and ecological restoration, and obtained independent research achievement. The method and technology system of collaborative control of macro pollutants and micro pollutants in the process of industrial wastewater treatment has been constructed, which is widely used in typical industrial wastewater, such as coal chemical industry, paper making, printing and dyeing industry. The research methods and technical system of high-resolution dynamic emission source inventory for regional air composite pollution research have been established, and key control technologies for industrial volatile organic compounds have been developed, providing scientific and technical support for air quality assurance of Asian Games held in Guangzhou and Universiade held in Shenzhen. The technology of desulfurization of waste residue to produce potash fertilizer and the technology of logistics state treatment and reuse of electronic waste have been developed. The adsorbent material with high biochemistry activity was prepared and applied in the contaminated site. The research results have been awarded the second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award and many other national and provincial awards.

Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Atmospheric Environment and Pollution Control was officially approved by Guangdong Provincial Department of Science and Technology in August 2011, and was constructed by South China University of Technology.
The Department of Science and Technology of Guangdong Province has evaluated 159 provincial key laboratories that were established before 2011. After three rounds of evaluation, our laboratory finally obtained the excellent grade (a total of 25 laboratories in the province).
Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Atmospheric Environment and Pollution Control is a comprehensive and multi-functional platform for scientific and technological service and research and development with local characteristics.
Given the characteristics of complex air pollution formed by highly-intense, concentratedly-emitting air pollutants which intersect, superimpose and influence each other,, the laboratory mainly conducts basic research, technological innovation, achievement transformation and personnel training in four research directions, namely, identification of air pollutant sources and formation mechanism of compound pollution, environmental catalytic technology and new air pollutant control, industrial waste gas purification theory and technology, and air pollution and health effects.
The high-resolution air emission source inventory of the Pearl River Delta region developed by the laboratory was applied to the joint prevention and control of regional air pollution and air quality assurance for the 2010 Asian Games held in Guangzhou and the 2011 Universiade held in Shenzhen. The developed technologies and equipment such as heat storage catalytic combustion are used to purify all kinds of organic waste gas, and realize the recovery and utilization of combustion heat while efficiently purifying. They have been applied to more than ten waste gas treatment projects, and the relevant achievements have won the 13th China Patent Excellence Award. The laboratory has formulated one national standard, one industrial standard and four Guangdong Provincial emission standards for industrial volatile organic compounds, and participated in the compilation of the national '12th Five-Year' environmental protection plan.
The laboratory has played an important and all-round technically-supporting role in the joint efforts of the government, enterprises and the public to solve the complex air pollution in the Pearl River Delta region.
Guangdong Environmental Risk Prevention and Emergency Response Engineering Technology Research Center was officially approved by Guangdong Science and Technology Department in December 2013. In 2017, the center has been successfully accepted by Guangdong Science and Technology Department.
Aiming at the major environmental emergencies that may occur within Guangdong Province, the center selects typical industries, key areas and important environmental sensitive targets, and studies the theories and technologies which involve the prevention and control of the process of warning and forecasting, treatment and disposal, process simulation and tracking, and environmental remediation for major environmental pollution events caused by various reasons. The center has set up six research and development directions, including environmental risk assessment and early warning and forecasting, prevention and control of heavy air pollution and emergency accidents, emergency treatment and risk prevention and control of river basin water body, emergency and remediation of sudden soil pollution, emergency disposal of hazardous waste and environmental emergency management think tank.The center aims to build a high-tech research and development and management decision supporting organization for environmental risk prevention and emergency disposal, which has significant impact in Guangdong Province and even the whole country, in order to provide technical reserve and support to respond to environmental emergencies both inside and outside Guangdong Province, as well as platforms for talents training and technical consultation for environmental risk prevention and control and emergency management in Guangdong Province.
Guangdong Environmental Nanomaterials Engineering and Technology Research Center was approved and recognized by the Science and Technology Department of Guangdong Province in November 2016.
On the basis of the existing international frontier research, the center cooperates with the engineering achievement transformation platform of Sino-Singapore International Joint Research Institute of technology innovation and research, incubation and application. The research center focus on the development of the controlled synthesis and pollution treatment of environmental nanomaterials, and accelerate the research process and promote the combination of research and industry, so as to apply the environmental nano materials in pollution control. The engineering center has four main research directions: synthesis and structural regulation of nano-environmental materials; mechanism of nano-environmental materials and pollutants; Green/clean disposal strategy of pollutants and engineering pilot test; Macro-level preparation and application demonstration of environmental nanomaterials.
The construction of this engineering center will promote the development of material preparation of macro-level, expand the scope of application of nanomaterials in pollution treatment, and explore the engineering technology for complex pollution characteristics, forming a series of patents and engineering demonstration technologies with Chinese characteristics and international leading and providine important solution to the pollution problems in the Pearl River Delta region.
Guangdong Ecological Dialysis and Environmental Treatment Engineering Technology Research Center was established in 2017. Based on the concept of sustainable ecology, environmental protection, low energy consumption and high efficiency, as well as the advanced technologies of biofiltration, aerobic denitrification, advanced oxidation, ecological restoration and membrane separation, the research center carries out environmental remediation research, consultation and technology application in the field of water, gas and solid. The center carried out the research and application of aerobic denitrification in the fields of high-efficiency biological filtration flue gas denitrification, high-efficiency nitrogen removal and organic pollutant removal of water, high-efficiency biological filtration in VOC removal and deodorization, and high-efficiency biological filtration technology in the treatment of rivers and lakes. In addition, it established the first biological filtration and denitrification system for industrial flue gas, applied aerobic denitrification technology to industrial wastewater and sewage treatment efficiently, studied the efficient of cell-breaking technology of sludge and the efficient hydrolyzation-anaerobic digestion technology, explored the release and control mechanisms and technologies of malodorous gases such as hydrogen sulfide and greenhouse gases such like NOx in sewage treatment plants and polluted water bodies (river gushing) for further controlling the release of air pollutants from the source, simultaneously carried out the efficient biochemical treatment and reuse technology of sewage. Also, it carried out research on the preparation of combustible gas and liquid fuel from solid waste of biomass by thermolysis, the treatment and reuse technology of efficient biofilm wastewater and biodegradable modified natural polymer materials. At present, more than 30 invention patents have been obtained. A number of technical achievements in the field of environmental engineering and environmental functional materials have been transferred and promoted.
In September 2017, Guangdong Engineering Technology Research Center of High-Value and Clean Utilization of Plant Fiber was approved by the Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Department, focusing on basic research and technology development of high value and clean utilization of plant resources.
Focusing on the bottleneck of key scientific and technological applications in the high-value and clean utilization of plant fibers, the Center conducts research on the application of plant resources in paper making, new energy and new materials. It has formed distinct characteristics in the aspects of quality decay mechanism, supramolecular structure and properties, quality improvement methods, high value utilization of plant fiber and pollution control in the process of high-value utilization of plant fiber. The new technology, process and equipment for the high value utilization of regenerated plant fiber and its process pollution control were developed. The center built an integrated platform for technological innovation and achievement transformation in the field of high-value clean utilization of regenerated plant fiber in China and developed and industrialized several key technologies.
Guangdong Surface Chemical Engineering and Technology Research Center for Energy Materials was officially approved by Guangdong Provincial Department of Science and Technology in January 2018. The center focuses on energy storage and conversion in the process of new energy development and energy efficient utilization. The work in fuel cell technology, lithium (sodium) ion battery technology, super capacitor technology, efficient utilization technology of solar energy and other four directions has formed a distinctive feature. Specific studies include: theoretical design of composition and structure of new materials; preparation of nanostructured materials; photoelectric absorption and transformation, transmission and coupling, and regulation and design of nanomaterials; modeling, simulation and in-situ characterization of charge and mass transport in sub-and electronic conductors; electrophysical and electrochemical behavior of thin films and interfaces; solid state electrochemical devices for energy storage and conversion, etc. The center has obtained independent research achievement in the boundary control methods and technical systems of advanced battery materials , the demonstration of power batteries, portable power supplies, large-scale energy storage and other aspects, the preparation technology of key materials and devices for solid oxide fuel cells with the applicatoin in mobile power supply and distributed power supply.
In recent years, the Center has undertaken more than 40 scientific research projects such as the national key research and development programs and the key projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, forming a batch of technologies and products with independent intellectual property rights, applying for more than 50 invention patents and obtaining more than 30 authorized invention patents.
The center originated from the master's and doctoral programs of environmental chemical engineering that were established in 1984. After several stages of development and integration of the disciplines and specialties of environmental chemical engineering, applied chemistry, chemical machinery, the center was founded in 2004.
The total value of the center's equipment is about 45 million yuan. There are 9 teaching laboratories for undergraduate majors such as Water Pollution Control Engineering Laboratory, Air Pollution Control Engineering Laboratory, Physical Pollution Laboratory, Environmental Engineering Microbiology Laboratory, Environmental monitoring laboratory, Water Supply and Drainage Engineering Laboratory, Environmental Analysis Laboratory, Open and Shared Laboratory (Precision Instrument Room) etc., covering the mainstream teaching and research directions of environmental engineering, environmental science and municipal engineering. At present, there are 44 teachers and technicians, 86% of whom have a doctor's degree and 70% have overseas study or research work experience, which provides a strong guarantee for the center's undergraduate experimental teaching and undergraduate training. The center focuses on four undergraduate experimental teaching tasks, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Engineering (English teaching), Environmental Science and Water Supply and Drainage Science and Engineering and also undertakes the environmental general education and cognition experimental courses for undergraduate students of the university.
Each year, it undertakes the professional experiment teaching for about 15 million hours. And it achieves the implementation of student joint training.
