On the afternoon of Dec. 19, Craig C Mello, winner of 2006 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, gave a lecture under the title of "RNA Interference Mechanism – Double-strand RNA Silent Gene" at the Music Hall on SCUT South Campus. It is reported that this was the first symposium of "Approaching Nobel" series, one of the 60th Anniversary commemorative activities. School leaders present on the symposium jointly launched the activity.
  
 
On the symposium, Craig C Mello presented the wonderful world of gene to the audience through pictures and animations. He expressed that inside organisms, large amount of information is stored in DNA or mRNA and as utilizing Google to search information, people can seek out the pathogenic genes so that RNA interference technologies can be adopted to impede the pathogenic genes from the source, that is, to make them slient and on longer take effect, which might provide a more effective treatment to difficult diseases like AIDs and cancer etc.
 
 
In the interview, Craig C Mello exclaimed wonderful twice to express his impression of SCUT. "SCUT is a very wonderful university, with excellent teahcers and eager students", said Craig C Mello. He was glad becoming the Honorary Professor of SCUT and expected to carry out futher cooperations with SCUT with regards to scientific research and personnel training etc.
