On December 26th 2011, an article titled Testing the H Indexes of These Biotechnogy Experts which published in Science Times· Chinese Biology Industry has sequenced the H indexes and the total citations of the mainly microbe experts of China, respectively. They searched the citations and H indexes in the US Web of Knowledge and 73 biology experts are on the ranking list including Prof. Wang Xiaoning and Prof. Lin Ying form South China University of Technology. SCUT is the top 15 of all the universities and institutes in China, which make SCUT the only Guangdong university on the list.

We can find Prof. Wang Xiaoning on the top 46 of the ranking list. The spokesman of Biology Science and Bioengineering School said that being on the list was of remarkable signification. The total citations of Prof. Wang Xiaoning and Prof. Lin Ying are 353 and 409, respectively, while the H indexes are both 9. These years, under the supporting of SCUT, sticking to the idea of Persisting to Engineering and Enhancing Science, the disciplines of Microbiology and Ferment Engineering have joined into the main stream of china with a certain extent of influence.

The H index which was raised by Hirsch, an American physical scientist, is used to assess the performance of scientists. As it is focus on the sum of high level articles of scientists, a higher H index means more influence of the scientist’s articles. Only the high quality research can arouse the attention of academic field and get a high H index. On the contrary, H index will be low.
