On September 30, 2021, the C130 machine-made sand concrete with high-performance developed jointly by the research group of Professor Suhong Yin from SMSE and Guangzhou Xingye Concrete Mixing Co., Ltd. was successfully pumped to the floor of over 220 meters high in Zengcheng New World Comprehensive Center, realizing three groundbreaking achievements in China:

1. Concrete with the highest strength performance that has ever been used in physical engineering construction in China;

2.  The highest grade of concrete that is prepared by domestic machine-made sand;

3. Achieving a pumping height of over 220 meters with C130 machine-made sand concrete of ultra-high strength performance.

In recent years, with the development of super high-rise, large-span, and special-shaped building structures, higher requirements have been placed on the strength, durability and reliability of concrete. Concrete with ultra-high strength performance has attracted a lot of attention because of its excellent properties like high strength, small volume, conserving resources and improving efficiency, which is in line with the Dual Carbon Goal and the Green Development Concept in China.

The C130 concrete with ultra-high strength performance is of revolutionary significance in replacing the increasingly depleted natural sand with artificially-made sand, fully conforming to the concept of environmental protection and sustainable development. The strength of C130 concrete reaches 149.5MPa, which means, a C130 concrete piece of 1 square meter can carry a weight of 15,000 tons, equivalent to the weight of 3,000 adult elephants (each elephant weighs about 5 tons). However, in usual case, the pumping height will decrease with increasing strength of concrete. Take the pumping of ordinary concrete as an example. If pumping ordinary concrete is like pumping tap water, pumping C130 concrete is like pumping sticky rice balls through pipelines, which is extremely difficult in technology. Moreover, it is also difficult to use machine-made sand instead of natural sand in mixing the C130 concrete in proper proportions.

In December 2020, commissioned by the China Construction Eighth Engineering Division and Guangzhou Xingye Concrete Mixing Co., Ltd., Professor Suhong Yin's research group started to research on the C130 concrete. The research group adopted a series of techniques, including optimizing the use of active powder in cementing materials, incorporating an integrated design of the close packing of sand and gravel, and adding high-performance composite additives. By comparing dozens of raw materials and conducting 286 groups of tests, they finally made the C130 concrete with ultra-high strength and high performance, which is suitable for ultra-high pumping. In addition, 6 batches and 36 groups of repeated tests were carried out to meet the design requirements and find the proper mixing ratio for production. After ten months of continuous effort, the C130 concrete was finally applied in super high-rise construction projects.
