The State Key Laboratory of Luminescent Materials and Devices, as the third national key laboratory in the South China Technology of University, was approved in 2011 by the State Ministry of Science and Technology. The laboratory was built on the basis of Specially Functional Materials Key Laboratory of the Ministry of Education, which has two national first class disciplines “Material Science and Engineering” and “Information and Communication Engineering” and several other related subjects, such as physics, organic chemistry, optics, and integrated devices. The major research directions in this laboratory include the development of photoactive materials and their application in organic electronic devices such as organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) and organic solar cells (OPVs), the physical mechanism of the related materials and devices, the photoactive device system integration and optical fiber laser etc.

There are 47 core staff (faculty) working in this laboratory including one academician of the Chinese Academy of Science, 25 doctoral supervisors and 28 professors.
