Introduction:

Dr. Min Zhu, born in 1962, is now a professor in materials science, and also Vice President of South China University of Technology.

After receiving his Ph.D degree in materials science from Dalian University of Technology in 1988, he had worked in Technical University of Berlin as Humboldt Research Fellow from 1993 to 1995, and then got a professorship in the South China University of Technology. He won the Distinguished Young Scientists Found fromNational Natural Science Foundation of China(NSFC) in 1999, and was appointed as a “Cheung Kong Professor” by the Ministry of Education of China in 2002. He visited City University of Hong Kong as Croucher Visiting Scholar in 1993, Tokyo University as senior research fellow in 2000, National Institute for Materials of Japan as a research scientist in 2001, and University of Sydney as visiting scientist in 2003. In 2010, he was appointed as the Chief Scientist for the National Key Basic Research Project (973 Project) from the Ministry of Science and Technology on “Novel high capacity hydrogen storage materials”. In 2016, he won the Fund for Innovative Research Groups from NSFC.

Professor Zhu’s research interest includes: (1) Hydrogen storage materials; (2) electrode materials for lithium and sodium ion battery; (3) multi-scale and multi-phase structured materials by mechanical alloying and plasma milling; (4) phase transformation and shape memory alloys. He has been chief investigators of more than 30 projects granted by NSFC, Ministry of Science and Technology and the Ministry of Education in the past 30 years. He developed a method of in-situ forming nanocomposite to improve kinetics of hydrogen storage alloys and developed an anode alloy applied in Ni-MH power battery; established a series of new reaction routes in Mg based hydrogen storage alloys and realized thermodynamic tuning of dehydriding; Achieving high and stable performance of Sn based anode by stabilizing the multi-scale structure; Invented a plasma milling method and equipment. He has published more than 300 papers in peer reviewed international journals, including “Nature Commun.”“Angew. Chemie Int. Ed.”“Energy @ Environ Sci”Adv Mater.““Materials Today““Nano Energy“ “Acta Mater.”“Appl. Phys. Lett.”“J. Mater. Chem”“J. Alloys & Compounds”“Scr. Mater.”; authored and edited more than 10 books and book chapters and conference proceedings; and give more than 30 invited talks. The citation of his published paper is more than 9000 and the H index is 51. He also own more than 20 patents including 5 PCT patents. He won Natural Science Award from Ministry of Education(second grade) in 2004, University Innovation Prize of China in Automobile Field from GM China in 2010, Natural Science Award (first grade) from Guangdong Provincial Government in 2012 and Technology Invention Award (first grade) from Ministry of Education in 2016.
