The Master of Translation and Interpreting (MTI) is a national professional degree program approved by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council. It aims to cultivate high-level, application-oriented, and professional translation and interpreting talents who are well-rounded morally, intellectually, and physically, capable of meeting the demands of global economic integration, enhancing China's international competitiveness, and contributing to the nation's economic, cultural, and social development. Approved by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, South China University of Technology was authorized to offer the MTI degree in 2010, with two specializations: English Translation and Japanese Translation, conferring a two-year full-time master's degree. In 2022, the program expanded to include the English Interpreting specialization, offering a three-year part-time MTI degree.

Leveraging the strengths of the first-level discipline of Foreign Languages and Literature in cross-cultural and translation studies, as well as country and regional studies, the Graduate Professional Programs Department boasts a robust faculty. It currently has 52 full-time and part-time supervisors, including 23 professors/senior translators and 16 associate professors/associate senior translators. The faculty team possesses extensive experience in translation teaching and practice, having published over 100 translated works and edited more than 10 translation textbooks. The department has achieved notable milestones, including one national-level curriculum ideology and politics demonstration course, one national-level curriculum ideology and politics teaching master team, one thematic case study recognized by the Ministry of Education Academic Degrees Center, and one provincial-level joint graduate training demonstration base. Equipped with facilities such as a Computer-Assisted Translation (CAT) training lab, simultaneous interpreting rooms, and a business training lab, and featuring various mainstream CAT software from both domestic and international sources, the department provides strong support for MTI course instruction and talent cultivation.

The Graduate Professional Programs Department adheres to the fundamental mission of fostering virtue through education, actively explores innovative educational models for MTI students, and strives to achieve synergy between knowledge impartation and value guidance. It aims to cultivate interdisciplinary translation talents for the new era who possess both a global perspective and a sense of national commitment, understand international rules and industry standards, and are equipped with professional skills and ethical standards. In response to societal and industry demands, the department actively builds collaborative platforms involving government, industry, academia, and research, with a focus on developing translation professional competence and practical skills. It integrates disciplinary knowledge with industry needs, emphasizing practicality, professionalism, operability, and applicability. Through years of practical exploration, the quality of MTI talent cultivation has achieved significant results, earning widespread acclaim from all sectors of society.
