The School of Foreign Languages at South China University of Technology actively responds to the national strategic call to “actively participate in the reform of the global governance system.” Leveraging the regional advantages of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and the strong foundation of being a “Double First-Class” category A university, the School has established the Department of International Organizations and Global Governance. Guided by the Outline of the Plan for Building a Strong Education Nation (2024–2035), the Department has established a “Four-in-One” cultivation mechanism integrating “university think tanks + practice bases + researchcenters + teaching departments,” creating a distinctive interdisciplinary talent cultivation system with strong engineering characteristics and a high degree of internationalization.
The Department is committed to cultivating high-quality talents who possess a deep understanding of international rules, practical proficiency in both English and French along with a second foreign language, familiarity with international cooperation norms, mastery of science and engineering knowledge, and cross-cultural leadership skills. The curriculum system covers core courses in international relations, international law, international politics, and global governance, and includes specialized “technology + governance” modules such as artificial intelligence and technology governance, sustainable development, data governance, and climate change, forming an interdisciplinary teaching system that integrates the humanities and engineering.
The Department boasts an international, interdisciplinary, and high-level faculty team, with all faculty members holding doctoral degrees and having overseas study or international research collaboration experience. Relying on platforms such as the Ministry of Education's Innovation Practice Base for Cultivating High-Level International Talents, the South China University of Technology Research Center for Indian Ocean Island Countries, and the Center for Country and Regional Studies, the Department has established in-depth cooperation with organizations including UNESCO, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). It has built an international learning system encompassing practical training, scientific research, courses, and projects, with practical courses accounting for 17% of the total credits.
Adopting a cultivation model of “value guidance, think tank drive, engineering empowerment, and practice orientation,” the Department is rooted in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area andserves national strategies such as the “Belt and Road” Initiative, the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), and the Global Development Initiative. It collaborates with multiple partners to jointly establish brandprojects including United Nations training bases, youth talent workshops for international organizations, and Model United Nations conferences, comprehensively enhancing students' competence for international organizations and practical capabilitiesin global governance.
Looking ahead, the Department ofInternational Organizations and Global Governance will continue to deepen collaborative cooperation with international organizations, government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and multinational corporations. It will regularly host international governance forums and academic seminars, expand students' international perspectives and career pathways, and cultivate interdisciplinary high-end talents who possess a sense of national commitment, global vision, and professional competence, contributing “SCUT Wisdom” and the“Chinese Approach” to the nation's participation in the reform and constructionof the global governance system.
