The Graduate Public English Teaching Department is primarily responsible for English instruction for all non-English major doctoral students (including Engineering Ph.D. students), academic master's students, and professional master's students at the university.
The department currently has 16 full-time faculty members, including 7 professors and associate professors, and 6 supervisors for professional master's students. All faculty members hold master's degrees or higher (including 3 with doctoral degrees). Additionally, every faculty member has experience studying, training, or visiting in English-speaking countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Singapore. This forms a dynamic and well-structured teaching team that combines experienced, middle-aged, and young faculty members.
The department collaborates with foreign teacher dispatch institutions in the United States, the United Kingdom, and other countries, employing 9 to 10 outstanding foreign teachers annually to undertake various teaching responsibilities. The addition of foreign teachers strengthens the department's teaching and research capabilities, while the integration of Chinese and international teaching theories and methods significantly enhances the quality of instruction. Foreign teachers play a vital role in cultivating students' cross-cultural communication skills and advancing the university's internationalization efforts.
Each year, the department offers three essential courses for thousands of doctoral students: Academic Paper Writing, English for International Conference Communication, and Chinese-to-English Translation. For master's students, the department provides a compulsory Comprehensive English course. Additionally, during the spring semester, nine public elective courses are offered for master's students, including Spoken English, Business English, Practical English Writing, English for Academic Communication, IELTS English, TOEFL English, News English, British and American Culture, and English Film Appreciation. These elective courses empower students with greater autonomy in their learning and better cater to their individualized needs.
In recent years, department members have led 8 provincial and ministerial-level research projects, 3 university-level teaching reform projects, and 7 key course development initiatives. They have published over 20 research papers domestically and internationally, authored 3 academic monographs, and edited 10 textbooks. The department has been recognized as an Outstanding Teaching Team at the university level three times. Among its members, one has received the National Teaching Achievement Award (Second Prize) and the Guangdong Provincial Teaching Achievement Award (First Prize), one has been awarded the Sixth University-Level Outstanding Teaching Achievement Award, and two have been honored as University-Level Outstanding Teachers.
