APPLICATION AND ENTRY

1.Why GZIC of SCUT?

South China University of Technology (SCUT) is one of China's leading universities directly under the Ministry of Education, and one of the “Project 211” “Project 985” and “Double First Class” project universities in China. 

Situated in the vibrant metropolis of Guangzhou(Canton)in South China, the university boasts a substantial campus spanning 407.47 hectares, comprising three distinct campuses: the Wushan Campus, the University Town Campus, and the Guangzhou International Campus (GZIC).

GZIC is a pilot demonstration campus of international education reform in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and a testament to SCUT’s dedication to an international outlook. On this campus, you will meet the high-level teaching faculties, most of whom are young scientists recruited from prestigious universities across the world, such as Harvard, MIT, Stanford, etc. At GZIC, you will enjoy international standard teaching methods, English teaching environment, world-class teaching resources including English text books, international courses (some are taught by overseas teachers and Chinese local teachers), and state-of-art research facilities and platforms, which all aim to cultivate students’ international perspectives, narture top-tier talents with strong sense of creativity and global competence.

2.How to apply?

Applicants are required to log into http://www.scut.edu.cn/apply, enter your personal information and upload scanned copies of all the application materials.

3.Do I need to pay application fee?

Yes. Applicants are required to pay the application fee online if they apply for self-sponsored programs. Application fee is 450 RMB and it is not refundable. Application can only be proceeded after application fee is paid.

Note: Application fee is free for applicants who apply for Chinese Government Scholarship.

4. When is the deadline for application?

1) For postgraduate programs, the application deadline is June 15 each year.

2) For undergraduate programs, the application deadline is June 30 each year.

3) For Chinese Government Scholarship, the application deadline is normally March 31 each year.  

Note:The deadline is subject to the latest notice of the year. We recommend that applicants submit their applications as early as possible to allow sufficient time to complete the application procedure and receive the offer , and to also leave enough time to apply for a visa.

5.What can I do if I have difficulties in uploading my documents on the application system?

Please note that the size of each uploaded file cannot exceed 2MB. You can upload the complete file in parts or pages. Please read the requirements of uploading on the system carefully and if you still have any further questions, please contact the Admissions Office via email to sieinfo@scut.edu.cn.

6.Can I change application information after I submitted online application?

If you want to make changes to your application such as change program, upload documents, etc., please contact the Admissions Office via email to sieinfo@scut.edu.cn.

7.Can I apply by using my previous application?

No. We recommend that you start a new online application and pay for the application fee as your previous application is invalid.

8.When can I receive my application result notice?

Upon receiving your online application and application fee, the Admissions Office will start the process of approval for your application. Normally it takes 2-3 weeks. If we require any further information or supporting documents, we will contact you by email. Please check the application system regularly for the progress and pay attention to the Email notifications.

9.When should I get to the university if I am accepted?

Normally, the degree programs start in early September. We recommend you to arrive at the university no later than 1st September. For the specific date for arrival, please check the details in your admission offer.

10.I'm applying for a Master/Ph.D. program. How can I find a supervisor and get an acceptance letter?

All applicants are required to submit an acceptance letter signed by SCUT supervisor when they make an online application for a Master/Ph.D. program. It is strongly recommended that you shall make contact with supervisor by email and get the letter signed before submitting your formal application. You may browse the staff profiles on the website of http://sie.scut.edu.cn/29028/list.htm(English version)or http://www2.scut.edu.cn/sie_cn/rhzddsjlxff/list.htm(Chinese version), and identify the academic faculty with the research interests similar to your own.

1) Applicants should prepare the following digital materials, including highest diploma or pre-graduate certificate, transcripts, proposal of research, language certificate, research achievement, personal statement and personal resume. Then make an appointment with the supervisor for interview.

2) When you get the “Supervisor Pre-Acceptance Letter” ready, please contact the supervisor. The supervisor will reply the applicants who pass the assessment and send the acceptance letter with signature to the applicants.

11.Are there any word limits for the personal statement/ study plan/ research plan?

A personal statement/ study plan/ research plan should be be a minimum of 1000 words. It can be written in English or in Chinese.

12.How to write a study plan or a research proposal?

A study plan or research proposal shall state in details about what you are going to do during your postgraduate study in China. It must include the information relevant to the major you are going to study or the area of your research interest, which are of vital importance for your future study. Therefore, please make sure your study plan or research proposal shall state the information as specific as possible.

13.If I'm not entirely sure whether I am eligible for the admission requirements for the postgraduate application or not, what shall I do?

Please check with the updated prospectus for the requirements for graduate programs on https://sie.scut.edu.cn/  and apply for online through  http://www.scut.edu.cn/apply when you are confident to meet the requirements.

1.Do I have to pay a deposit for my place of study after I receive admission letter?

No. We do not charge deposits for any programs. For more information about the tuition fee, accommodation and insurance, please check the following websites:

2.Can I postpone my study?

No. Your place of study will be canceled if you fail to register on time.

ABOUT TUITION AND FEES

1.How much is my tuition fee?

2.How can I pay for my fees?

Tuition fee and accommodation fee should be paid online before registration, or you can also complete payment after arrival during registration. Students will receive detailed guidance of payment by email before registration.

For those students who withdraw study from the program for some reasons, the Tuition and accommodation fees will be refunded in accordance with the relevant regulations of the university. If you have any questions, please consult the Academic Affairs Office and International Student Management Office.

3.Should I buy insurance?

Yes. It is compulsory for international students to purchase insurance. The insurance fee is 400 RMB for one semester and 800 RMB for one year. If you already have similar insurance coverage from your home country or within China, please show the related documents to the staff when register. Scholarship recipients must purchase insurance in advance and will be reimbursed later along with their living allowance.

4.When and how do I apply for on-campus accommodation?

On-campus: Since to the number of on-campus accommodation is limited, on-campus accommodation reservation service follows the early bird principle: First come, first served.  The students will receive detailed guidance of accommodation reservation by email after admission. Please do check your email carefully and follow the instructions and make reservation as early as possible. 

Off-campus: Private rented accommodation can also be a good alternative. Please note that international students must register at local police station within 24 hours after moving into off-campus housing. 5.Where can I find the on-campus accommodation types and fees?

6.How much is the living expenses of studying in Guangzhou?

The estimated annual living expense for a single student residing in Guangzhou is about RMB 20,000 to RMB 30,000. This budget should encompass various essentials such as sustenance, attire, study materials, and incidental travel expenses.

ABOUT SCHOLARSHIPS

1. What scholarships are available? Can I have scholarships for English medium programs?

We have 3 types of scholarships available for applicants. For details, please visit the website of http://sie.scut.edu.cn/, and check the information as follows:

1)Chinese government scholarship: funding for masters and PH.D programs, applicants can apply online in our system; for applicants applying for undergraduate, they need to inquire with and submit their application to the Chinese embassy or consulate in the local area.

2)Guangdong Provincial Government Outstanding International Student Scholarship:The scholarship covers all the majors of the degree programs in SCUT. 2.How to apply for Chinese Government Scholarship for undergraduate programs?

The undergraduate program funded by the Chinese government scholarship needs to be applied through the Chinese Embassy or Consulate in your local area. The application process is as follows:

1) Applicants should submit applications to the Chinese Embassy or Consulate in their local area. Meanwhile, applicants need to submit online applications on the university’s application system (www.scut.edu.cn/apply) and pass the university's review to obtain a pre-admission letter;

2) After the Chinese Embassy or Consulate has screened and selected the list, it will be submitted to the China Scholarship Council for review.

ABOUT VISAS

1.What kind of visa do I need to enter China?

1)X1 visa: International students who study in China for a long period (more than 180 days) must enter China with an X1 visa. International students with an X1 visa must apply for a residence permit within 30 days of entry. We will provide an electronic JW202 form (Confirmation Form for Study China).

2)X2 visa: International students studying in China for a short period (less than 180 days) must enter China with an X2 visa. We will provide an electronic DQ form (Information Form for Foreign Students' Short-term Visit).

*International students studying in China must hold a regular passport with X1 or X2 visa to enter China. If international students hold other types of visas, they are not eligible to study on campus and will be responsible for any consequences.

2.When will I receive my JW202/DQ form?

Please note that we will process your JW202/DQ form as quickly as possible, and you will receive email when your JW202/DQ form is ready. Upon receiving the email, you shall download the digital JW202/DQ form by yourself. Once the digital JW202/DQ form is ready, we will issue you the official admission letter.

You shall contact and consult the Chinese Embassy/Consulate in your home country to follow the updated instruction about applying for study visa.

*Applying for JW202/DQ needs at least 10 working days.

1)Please visit http://www.studyinchina.edu.cn and enter your personal information to download the form.

2)Please login the application system of SCUT https://scut.17gz.org/ and download from the “Admission letter” portal.

3.What documents do I need to bring with me to China?

1. Valid passport and study visa

2. SCUT Admission Letter

3. Digital JW201/JW202/DQ form

4. Foreigner Physical Examination Form and Blood Test Report (original copy, if available)

4.If I can’t get my visa in time before the start of registration period, can I register later?

The admission letter states the final registration deadline. If special circumstances prevent you from registering on time, you must contact the Admissions Office as soon as possible by email at sieinfo@scut.edu.cn to explain the reason for your delay.
