Yan CAO

Biography

  • Dr. Yan Cao is an Associated Professor (PI), Chief Technology Officer (CTO) at the School of Emergent Soft Matter at South China University of Technology (2022-current). She is a Principal Investigator of the Institute of Advanced Study at Shenzhen University (2015–2022). She is proficient in designing and investigating novel soft matter structure by utilizing electron diffraction on transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction characterization and analysis. She got a Ph.D. in polymer physics at the University of Akron, USA (2007–2012) and have been engaged in postdoc research in Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST)-ERATO project (2012–2014) at Kyushu University, Fukuoka. She is an experimental scientist and a recognized expert in electron diffraction on transmission electron microscopy and 2D wide-angle X-ray diffraction studies on polymer, liquid crystal and functional supramolecular crystal structure. She is the author or co-author of more than 50 peer-reviewed scientific publications in Nature Comm., Macromolecules, Angew kemie, Nano Energy,ACS Optical Materials, International Union of Crystallography and so on.

Research Interests

  • 1.Developing functional liquid crystals or supramolecules or polymers that have great potential application in smart windows, photovoltaic cell, micro-supercapacitors and biomedical materials applications. I am mainly engaged in investigate the self-assembled crystal structure in the field of polymers, liquid crystals, functional supramolecules, and other soft matters with the electron diffraction methods in transmission electron microscopy.

  • 2.Exploring the long-range ordered curvature-induced novel polymer nanostructure in cylindrical nano-confinement. Including: a. Combining diffraction method (micron-scale X-ray technique plus nanoscale electron diffraction technique) to examine the curvature-assisted self-assembled nanostructure. b. symmetry breaking.

  • 3.Self-assembled novel functional carbon-based hybrid materials.
