Personal Profile
Lei Zhang is a Chair Scientist at the Institute for Digital Economy (IDEA) in the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area, where he leads research in computer vision and robotics. He also holds adjunct professor positions at South China University of Technology and The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou). Previously, he served as a Principal Researcher at Microsoft Research Asia, Microsoft Research headquarters, and Microsoft’s computer vision–related product divisions. For many years, he has led research teams in fundamental studies in computer vision and applied research in large-scale image analysis, object detection, and vision-language multimodal understanding. His research outcomes have been widely deployed in Microsoft Bing Search and Microsoft Cognitive Services cloud platforms.
He has published over 150 papers in computer vision and related fields and holds more than 60 granted U.S. patents. In recognition of his contributions to large-scale image recognition and multimedia information retrieval, he was elected as an IEEE Fellow in 2020.
