Personal Profile

Dr. Patrick Chan received his Ph.D. from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 2009 and joined the School of Computer Science and Engineering at South China University of Technology (SCUT) the same year. He is currently an Associate Professor and one of the principal leads of the Machine Learning and Control Lab in the school. His primary research interests include deep learning, image recognition, adversarial learning, and secure machine learning. He has published numerous papers in international journals and conferences, with an H-index of 23. He has led and participated in multiple research projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, Guangdong Provincial Natural Science Foundation, and the Fundamental Research Funds for the Central Universities, and has successfully applied his research outcomes to industry through various collaborative R&D projects with enterprises.

Dr. Chan serves as Associate Editor and later Deputy Editor-in-Chief for the International Journal of Machine Learning and Cybernetics, and as Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Cybernetics and Information Sciences. He actively contributes to the international academic community, having served as a Board Member of IEEE Systems, Man, and Cybernetics Society (SMCS) (2014-2016) and Chair of the IEEE SMCS Hong Kong Chapter (2014-2015). He has also organized and chaired program committees for numerous international conferences.

In student supervision, Dr. Chan has frequently guided students in programs such as the National Undergraduate Innovation and Entrepreneurship Training Program, the "Challenge Cup" competition, and SCUT's Bai Bu Ti Research Program, achieving outstanding results. His students have published multiple papers in international journals and conferences under his mentorship. He has consistently ranked first in teaching evaluations within his school for several consecutive years and has received multiple honors including Outstanding Teaching Award and Outstanding Class Advisor.
