Biography
Dr. Zhang Dong is an Associate Professor at South China University of Technology (SCUT). He serves as the advisor for multiple research teams and laboratories, including the Future Innovation Laboratory for Embodied Intelligence, Xiaoping Technology Innovation Team, DJI Robotics Joint Laboratory, South China Tiger Robotics Team, and RobotIC Robotics Team. Under his guidance, the team has achieved remarkable success in national competitions:
Champion in the 2017 and 2018 China College Student Robot Competition Robomaster
Third Place in the 2016 and 2021 Robomaster competitions
Awards in various national competitions such as Robocon, Mechanical Innovation Design Competition, Digital Manufacturing Competition, Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, Process Control Competition, Challenge Cup, and "Internet+" Innovation Competition. Over the past four years, his students have won 156 provincial-level or above awards in science and technology competitions.
Dr. Zhang has led 4 national-level projects, 10 provincial-level projects, and 58 horizontal research projects. He has received 3 provincial-level teaching achievement awards, published 19 SCI/EI-indexed papers, and holds 117 authorized invention patents and 269 utility model patents. His work has also incubated 18 start-up companies and trained over 800 outstanding talents in scientific and technological innovation.
The research conducted in his laboratory integrates cutting-edge technologies with industrial applications, focusing on areas such as UAV inspection for high-voltage power grids, automatic substation ground inspection, and autonomous road marking robots, with significant industry impact.

Social Contributions
Dr. Zhang focuses on cultivating undergraduate robotics innovation teams through a 3D training model that integrates skill development, practical projects, and entrepreneurship. By leveraging industry partnerships with leading companies (e.g., DJI, Huawei, Misumi, Texas Instruments, National Instruments, Autodesk, NVIDIA, SolidWorks, Audiowell, New Oriental, Infineon, Gowin Semiconductor, and 普渡机器人), he has created a collaborative innovation ecosystem and practical platforms for students.
His team’s achievements have attracted extensive media coverage, including reports by CCTV, Xinhua News Agency, China Youth Daily, and leading local media. The documentary of SCUT’s Robotics Innovation Base has been viewed over 40 million times.
The base hosts 170+ annual visits from domestic and international institutions, including Ngee Ann Polytechnic (Singapore), Fukuoka University (Japan), Nanyang Technological University (Singapore), HKUST, University of Macau, and top Chinese universities, serving as a model for innovation education.
