On the morning of Aug.15, Center for World-Class Universities (CWCU) in Shanghai Jiao Tong University published the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) in 2012. SCUT entered the top 500 for the first time and the academic ranking of engineering and chemistry even entered world top 200. The international status of SCUT has improved strikingly and the university is competitive enough to play a role in international society.
According to the ranking results, there were altogether 43 universities in China entering ARWU 2012, including 28 in mainland, 9 in Taiwan and 5 in Hongkong.
What is more gratifying, the academic ranking of engineering and chemistry have entered the world top 200—engineering was ranked in the group of top 101-150 and chemistry in the group of top 151-200 (universities in the same group are ranked in initial order of their names).
It is reported that ARWU was first published in 2003 and has been published for 10 years. The ranking is established according to the achievements of scientific researches and academic performances which are comparable internationally, including the folding number of alumni and teachers endowed with the Nobel prize and the Fields prize and the number of scientists whose achievements have been quoted for the most, etc.
