On the afternoon of September 7, the Department of Electronic Business held a grand commencement ceremony in the Music Hall to welcome the incoming class of 2023. The ceremony was attended by esteemed guests, including Mr. Jinsong Du, Deputy General Manager of Guangdong Telecommunications Planning & Designing Institute, Mr. Cong Chen, General Manager of Tianmu Data (Fujian) Technology, and Ms. Yixian Liu, Recruitment Manager of Digital Guangdong. Also in attendance were Miaoxian Wu, the Secretary of the Party Committee; Wenming Zuo, the Dean; Yang Lei , the Vice Dean; and Liu Kaipin, , the Vice Secretary of the Party Committee, along with all faculty members and over 300 freshmen of the Class of 2023.

  At the commencement ceremony, Dean Zuo warmly welcomed the new students and offered heartfelt congratulations. Dean Zuo explained that the newly established major of Big Data Management and Application is a response to the growth in big data and digital economy, aiming to nurture well-rounded professionals with a deep understanding of data, technical proficiency, business acumen, management skills, and decision-making abilities. He encouraged the new students to make the most of the department’s excellent resources, bridging the gap between high school and university, and elevating their competencies.

  Mr. Jinsong Du, the Deputy General Manager of Guangdong Telecommunications Planning & Designing Institute, drew inspiration from the renowned “Digital China” strategy to illustrate the present and future of the big data industry to the students. He urged them to broaden their horizons during their free time and change their thinking patterns to develop a broader perspective on problem-solving.

  Mr. Cong Chen, the General Manager of Tianmu Data (Fujian) Technology, delivered a lecture titled “Embrace the Data Wave - Your Uniqueness with Data”, illustrating the practical application of big data technology with detailed examples from the medical and power industries. He also offered insights on how to prepare for a career in the big data industry from educational and employment perspectives, drawing from his own startup and project experience.

  In order to enhance the collaboration between industry, academia, and research, and bolster the employability of our students in the big data field, our department has appointed Mr. Du and alumnus Mr. Chen as off-campus tutors, and they have been formally issued letters of appointment.

  Through collaboration with Digital Guangdong Network Construction for talent development, our department has jointly launched the Digital Guangdong Elite Big Data Management Program. Wen Tang, Wanlin Li, and Daoping Rao, outstanding students from the inaugural cohort of the program, were invited to share their remarkable experiences and valuable lessons learned from their internships at “Digital Guangdong”. Following this, the inauguration ceremony for the “Second Cohort of Digital Guangdong Elite Big Data Management Program” took place.

  The subtle guidance provided by teachers is crucial for student development. The ceremony also included an award presentation for outstanding head teachers of the 2022-2023 academic year, expressing gratitude for their hard work. Professor Lipan Feng, head teacher of the Class 3 E-Commerce Group, attended as the representative of distinguished head teachers. He shared his experiences and emphasized the importance of students cherishing time and endeavoring to step out of their comfort zone, striving for continual growth during their university years. Finally, on the eve of Teacher’s Day, representatives of the incoming Class of 2023 conveyed their holiday wishes to all the teachers present.

  At this new starting point, SCUT will always hold onto the belief that takes the academy as the foundation, talented ones as the strength, open minds as the vitality, and the culture of the university as the energy to thrive and last. As the 2023 freshmen embark on their journey, they will set new goals under the guidance of the school and faculty, continuously seeking self-improvement and striving to become influential individuals capable of shouldering significant responsibilities.
