Abstract
Aviation transportation is among the industries with the highest carbon emissions per unit mileage and faces tremendous challenges in emission reduction. Large‑scale substitution with sustainable bio‑jet fuels represents one of the primary viable approaches to cut CO₂ emissions in the aviation sector and facilitate its carbon‑neutrality target. The sustainable bio‑jet‑fuel industry is currently undergoing rapid development, giving rise to a suite of emerging technical pathways. This presentation summarizes major technical routes for sustainable bio‑jet fuels, including hydroprocessed esters and fatty acids (HEFA), gasification‑Fischer‑Tropsch synthesis (G+FT), and alcohol‑to‑jet (ATJ). It highlights research achievements from Prof. Longlong Ma’s group concerning the creation of innovative pathways for sustainable bio‑jet fuels, development of key refining technologies for bio‑jet fuels, and synthesis of high‑performance special jet fuels. The report further analyzes existing challenges confronting bio‑jet‑fuel technologies at the current stage and provides prospects for their technical deployment.
Biography
Prof. Longlong Ma is a Chair Professor and PhD Supervisor at Southeast University. He is a recipient of the inaugural National Ten‑Thousand Talent Program for Scientific and Technological Innovation Leaders, and a selected expert of the National Hundred‑Thousand‑Ten‑Thousand Talent Project. He served as Chief Scientist for the National Basic Research Program (973 Program). His previous administrative appointments include Party Secretary and Director of the Guangzhou Institute of Energy Conversion, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Vice‑President of the Guangzhou Branch of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He currently serves as Director‑General of the Chinese Renewable Energy Society, Chairman of its Biomass Energy Committee, and Chairman of the Biomass Energy Industry‑Technology Innovation Strategic Alliance. As principal investigator, he has led more than 40 research projects, covering the National Basic Research Program (973 Program), National Key R&D Program, National High‑Tech R&D Program (863 Program), National Key Technology R&D Program, and Key Programs of the National Natural Science Foundation of China. He holds over 80 authorized patents and has authored 10 academic monographs. His honors include the Second‑Class National Award for Scientific and Technological Progress (2/9), China Patent Excellence Award (2/7), three First‑Class Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Awards (all ranked first), the 10th Guangdong Dingying Science and Technology Award (2010), National Excellent Science and Technology Worker (2012), Guangdong Nanyue Innovation Award (2016), and Guangdong Most Beautiful Scientist (2021).
