From July 9 to 11, 2026, the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at South China University of Technology (SCUT) organized a study tour to Hong Kong for 29 students from the 2023 cohort of the Chemistry Top Talent Base Program and the Chemistry Strong Foundation Program. The delegation was led by Professor Zhu Chuanle, Deputy Director of the Department of Chemistry. Professor Wu Wanqing, class advisor of the 2023 Top Talent Base Program, Mr. Huang Qintong, class advisor of the 2023 Chemistry Strong Foundation Program, and counselor Mr. Li Wenjun accompanied the group. The delegation visited three universities: The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, and The University of Hong Kong. This study tour aimed to broaden the international perspectives of top-tier and foundation-program students in chemistry, strengthen their awareness of scientific innovation and comprehensive practical skills, and support SCUT’s development into a high-level university.
On July 9, the delegation arrived at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University for its first stop. Professor Lai Zhuangchai provided an introduction to the university. Subsequently, Professor Zhang Xuming delivered an academic lecture covering microfluidics and micro-nano optical technologies, presenting cutting-edge research outcomes. Faculty and students engaged in in-depth academic discussions with the professors and toured the laboratories to gain first-hand insight into the university’s research environment and experimental facilities.

On July 10, the delegation traveled to The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Professor Kwong Fuk Yi gave an overview of the university via video. Ms. Lu Cuiwen delivered an academic lecture on aromatic essential oils. Students experienced cosmetic preparation and product trials on site, learning about the real-life applications of chemistry. Afterwards, the group visited the Department of Chemistry. SCUT alumni currently pursuing doctoral degrees at the university held a forum with the visiting students, sharing their study experiences in Hong Kong, research insights, and tips for academic paper publication.

On July 11, the delegation reached its final destination, The University of Hong Kong. Professors Huang Zhongxing and Chan Kwun Wa from the Department of Chemistry gave presentations on asymmetric organic synthesis; Professor Li Ying spoke on biochemistry; Professor Tse Chun Ming addressed electrocatalysis; and Professor Lau Chun Chi focused on organic synthesis. They shared the latest international research frontiers. During the Q&A session, students exchanged views with the speakers on specialized topics, including catalyst design and selectivity control in asymmetric synthesis.

The three-day tour was intensive and rewarding. The distinctive academic atmospheres and research cultures of the three universities left a deep impression on the students. The 29 participants returned with rich gains and reflections. The exchange not only broadened their academic horizons but also ignited their passion and confidence for chemistry research.
The successful implementation of this program was made possible through the joint efforts of SCUT and the three Hong Kong universities. All parties look forward to further deepening inter-university cooperation and building broader international exchange platforms for students.
